Genetics
Genetics has done more to change the world than any other field of science (Cohen). Advancements in the field of genetics have allowed humans to develop many different new theories about how organisms have grown and developed over the span of the ages, and the field now covers everything from crops to cloning. The more knowledge scientists gain in regards to genetics, the more they are able to accomplish.
Experiments carried out by scientists have revealed that most organisms carry genes received from each of its parents. For example, scientists discovered a purebred tall pea plant has a height gene, which is abbreviated as TT. Theyve also found that short pea plants have two short genes abbreviated as tt. If these two plants were to form an offspring, the new plant would have one height gene from each plant (Tt), because it takes a gene from each parent.
Scientists have also figured out this is because genes are composed of a double-helical molecule DNA. When reproduced, the DNA strands of one parent will fall apart and allow parts of the DNA from the other parent to rebuild the original DNA strand, thus resulting in two new strands for the offspring. This is why there are things such as inherited disease. Sometimes a parents genes will become mutated as a result of a medical condition. When the offspring of these parents get the inherited DNA, the process of forming a new DNA is sometimes affected to the point where the offspring receives the mutated part. This causes the child to inherit certain diseases the parents might have.
The field of genetics is growing, and the more knowledgeable the scientific community becomes, the more they can use genetics to change things. The field offers the potential to cure disease, to fix human deformity, to increase crop production, and more. We have only begun to experience the improved world that genetics offers us in the future.
