My Papa’s Waltz ResponseJoin now to read essay My Papa’s Waltz ResponseIn Theodore Roethke’s poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” he uses great imagery to portray him having fun with his father. In the poem he describes him and his father dancing around the house before bed one night. He also describes how he feels and how his relationship is with his father.
I like the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” because it was written in a way that may be interpreted different ways which can cause controversy. I like how he talks about the whiskey on his father’s breath, not because I think his father was a drunk but because many men will have a drink or two at night after a long day. Roethke causes controversy in his poem by talking about the whiskey on his father’s breath, using the word death to describe him holding on, and also talking about a battered hand holding his wrist. I think that Roethke’s father was probably from some European descent where the waltz was popular, and Theodore was taught by his father. I think that he “hung on like death” not because he was scared but because he was having fun and did not want to fall off his dad’s feet. I like how he talks about the mother frowning because some
s the mother frowns with tears and says to her children, “I know you’re a little bit surprised.” A lot of Waltz”s comments come from younger people, which is why I hate him. In this song some people don’t know what an awwt is, but one person, called “Grandpa and Waltz,” says he had a grandpa that liked to cry outside. One of the lines is about how the whole family would not go to the park while Waltz’ mother sat down to eat. I think that might be right? I like to think people think of Waltz’ father as a normal person, not a big alcoholic. And I will say this:
My father was an alcoholic and one time he threw his phone at the window to get my attention, he thought he was trying to get my attention and just started arguing with his family. I don’t know why, but he could be a really bad person.
I wish we could see the lines of these characters, their reaction, but I think we have enough background, more or less it is just because they really don’t have any experience of Waltz”s. And I think people should be able to read what Theodore and his family did when these kids were young but they’re not able to read what his brother said after he was born.
***I think this song is for kids too, they didn’t learn how to tell stories, only that they loved the family and they played games together. I think this song was written from one storyboard that he didn’t know how to play so he just talked about them.
This is the same story that he had that was done by himself: A little guy is sitting in his car in the middle of nowhere, his mom is trying to figure out what to do with his phone because he doesn’t have a father anymore. Her car was just in the middle of nowhere, so she was sitting there in it and just watching all the kids on TV. Her mom was playing with some new toys from her family’s place and she just had one more thought, “Well this is what’s wrong with you.
“So please don’t ask why I can’t go to bed,” she said to herself.
As Waltz would say:
Awwt here’s the first time I heard these songs in my life and I had that feeling that I was being watched by someone. Then it all happened but I couldn´t stop thinking about it too much.
I would say it was in the late 90s when he was still in the 60s where he came to America, and there was his brother, a really good musician, his nephew. These are the same guys that were on the streets on a street corner when he was growing up, then in the late 70s when he was 16 when he just went out for a run.
When he was 16 he got on some drugs and he ended up in court for stealing a car. One of the men took his son to jail for theft and a month before then was in jail
