Introduction
As introduction to question one and two of Assignment 1, the situation I plan to discuss is not a fictitious situation but indeed a real situation. The organization I currently work for, I have been with for almost a year . We are a pack house that repacks fruit and vegetables for Pick n Pay, Spar and Freshmark. The company currently employs 4 admin ladies, a Quality Assurance Manager, a Production Supervisor, two Salesmen, the Managing Director and lastly, 70 permanently employed packers (58 women and 12 men) and depending on the busyness of the season, they employ contract workers to help out in the pack house.
To introduce you to the main points I plan to discuss (in terms of organizational culture) in the final practical project, a complete summary will be given under the following headings: 1) The organisational culture of the organisation where I work; (2) How new employees are accommodated in my organisation and (3) How I could improve the culture of my organisation.
The organisational culture of the organisation where I work
I shall be discussing the basic nature of organisational culture also keeping in mind how all the headings are applicable to my own organisation. Reference will be made to the core cultural characteristics (pg 511), the value placed on people, the strength and role of organisational culture in my organisation and the type of form that my organisation has. All of these different things and more will be discussed. I shall be using the Jerald Greenberg textbook (Chapters 14 and 16 for now) as well as some of the additional reading material provided to help me determine the organisational culture that my organisation has
How new employees are accommodated in my organisation
To talk about how new employees are accommodated in my organisation I shall refer back to chapters 2 (especially organisational justice and ethics, pages 67 to 72), chapter 3 (Perception and learning: Understanding and adapting to the new work environment which includes stereotyping and how we perceive others),chapter 7 (Motivation in Organisation), chapter 8 (Group dynamics and work teams) and lastly chapter 12 and 13 (Power: Its uses and abuses in organisations and Leadership in Organisations). All of these chapters and additional provided reading material will be used to describe how new employees are accommodated or not accommodated in my organisation. Accommodation goes both ways from a management point of view and then the packers (or staff) point of view and how they decide how new employees are welcome or not.
