Following the progress of human civilization, education has undergone a profound transformation. Education, is defined as “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university”. It is believed that industrialized societies such as New Zealand and the developing countries such as China would have the similar educational system. However, a comparison of school systems in New Zealand and China indicates several similarities but certain differences.The school systems of New Zealand and China are similar as follows. Firstly, the subjects taught in primary school are generally the same, such as reading and writing, mathematics, basic science, music, sports and art. In addition, the majority of primary school teachers are women. Secondly, both New Zealand and China have university entrance exams, which are the chances to enroll domestic prestigious universities. Furthermore, technical schools are the alternative for students, which teach more practical skills. In addition, both in China and New Zealand fewer students obtain higher education, it is less than 30% of students graduate in such as university and college.Despite these similarities, the differences of educational system between NZ and China varies greatly in several aspects. Firstly, children start a compulsory education at a different age, usually between 8 and 16 years old in China. In contrast, students in New Zealand should go to school for 5-16 year olds. In addition, the school term is also different. In China it begin in September and end in February. However, it is from February to December in NZ.
