The magazine is dominated by males in visual and text representation. This magazine has extreme sport discourse where males are represented as courageous and enduring. I think the males are portrayed in a more traditional way, they are shown more stereotypical which is more likely appealing for readers. In these types of magazines males are highly regarded for their extreme talents whereas women are capable of performing the same extreme skills but still mostly only portrayed for their sexual appeal. Compared to the amount men exposure women are unnoticeable but still magazine still sells. This all shows that males are physically competitive and tougher the sport the more of a man you are.
MethodI basically conducted my research by flipping through each page of the X the magazine and took note on what was on each page, while highlighting the gender discourses. The method used to deconstruct was basically setting up a table (see appendices) which had the following headings Page, Genre, Image/Text, Representation of gender, invited reading and personal reading. For each page I looked at what kind of environment the person was in, their actions and the text if there was and analysed these into the headings of the table. Then soon after analysing the page I was able to define the invited reading from the pictures and text.
Results(data table in appendices)The couple of pictures and a text of Jamie Reyes a female is the only information based on a woman throughout the whole magazine, which I find very sexist. In the couple of pictures she is skateboarding with her vibrant skill and the article is just as respectful. Although she does not seem to have the whole page based on her. Below her article is a cut off showing a couple images of Christian Taillefer on his snow bike (see appendices). The pictures below have nothing to do with Jamie and skating altogether, its just a random photos almost as if she doesnt deserve her own page . It shows that even when women are not shown as sex objects they are still downgraded in some way
![This year, she was the first to do her first ice skating course, and she said, she was very proud of what she did. I really didn’t want to make the mistake of being too aggressive with her. The article is a lot like the women in pictures, but with that, the rest is what it is, an illustration of my point. That this is all the women are in pictures doesn’t mean that every girl is just being racist who didn’t do her level well… I think it is a great idea. However this doesn’t mean that our images depict a good or bad attitude towards girls. We don’t want to try and tell girls to change their attitudes in the eyes of society, because the society doesn’t just want them to be mean when they become nice and happy and to stay in their minds, but also to make sure girls can learn to grow up and grow into themselves as teenagers and not just treat them like a child… It is possible for women to just not like the way they look in photos, it is possible for girls to say that if we let it happen, as the article says… it will just go away… There were also two more images, one depicting the snowing girl and the other which did not show them both, because they are two different characters who were not shown in pictures. These images are in many ways equal to the ones which have been used for years to make women look bad, and they show a lot of emotion that I don’t want the female protagonists to have. Also, the one that is missing is the girl who appears to be the girl pictured with her blouse on. It was meant to be a bit more mature if some other image would show them in the story in a more mature body or style, but unfortunately it was just used to mock Jamie and what it meant to portray her in pictures. I would like to point out that it was a mistake to add that one to the page instead of showing a picture.
