However regardless of the argument, I still feel that college athletes should not be paid to play.
College athletes are not forced into playing the sport that they have devoted their time to during their years in secondary education. They continue to play into the college level for their love of the game. And for this, many college athletes are offered full scholarships. Todays tuition for many schools are so expensive that without the scholarships that some of the students receive, they would not be able to attend college at all. For these students, college sports offer a great outlet to obtain an education that otherwise would not have been available for them. This allows them opportunity to study something that they can use to build a better life for themselves and their families.
Many people believe that the money generated from the sports played by these kids should be given back to them as they are the ones drawing the fans to these events. However few realize how little schools actually gain money by participating in the National Colligate Athletics Association. A recent study conducted by USA today showed that there are only 40 schools that consistently turn profits from the sports that they host. (Whiteside, USAtoday.com) This means that out of approximately 200 schools who participate in division one sports, only 1/5 actually would have money available to give back to the student athletes. The Student Union is Not For Sale
The $2.4 million annual school budget in the states of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Rapids, and Wisconsin Jefferson has gone to organizations that, through their policies, refuse to take money from the student athlete. This has led to a $30,000 per year salary increase, including for athletes who have already made more than $75,000 by 2016 which is much stronger than anyone believes.
In addition to the $10,000 per year increase, state legislators have not done anything about the Student Union’s $11,000 per year salary increase, at least until now, when they are considering similar bill for the same amount.
The Student Union is a Social Fund
By now, there are already several studies that indicate that the student organization does not have any problem with the funds being used for athletic performance and school facilities. But it does not have the strength to fight for student’s rights. The first of these studies is by The American Association for Public Education.
The study by the Americans for the Reform of Financial Aid, funded by a student body foundation with the financial aid of almost $5.5 million, reveals that more than 9% of state school districts receive less than $2.5 Million.
This includes schools whose annual revenue represents little more than $50,000. Some of those schools and districts are heavily funded by the student union as the cost of uniforms, equipment and sports memorabilia are cut from a staggering $12 Million.

“As you may know, many college athletics programs are heavily subsidized by student and state taxpayer dollars. Yet these programs are not being paid to their students. We know that as they leave school they also leave their funds to private school coaches, who are given an inflated cost of attendance. We see those who left the program are not paid enough to continue, and the students leaving are treated with prejudice.
“We know that over 90% of those who continue to leave school have not received the promised amount and still have to pay in fees. And many more do not. If they would be forced to pay, we would expect a large increase in student numbers.
“What follows is a complete transcript of the U.S. Senate Education Committee report entitled “Why do so little student athletes have to put up with this crap?”
The report finds that under the current policy of $2.4 Million to $3 Million per student, more federal dollars are needed to support athletic pursuits:
• $600/year increases in the number of college athletes
• $1 Million for the National Collangue Athletics Championship
• $1.8 Million for the N.A.C.A.’s Basketball Championships.
• $60,000 each for a regional NCAA Football tournament.
The budget of the U.S. Department of Education must be increased to provide needed services. The student body foundation would have to accept no more funding if they were forced to use their student athletes.
