The Prison ZimbardoThe dispositional hypothesis in the Zimbardo prison study refers to the idea that the violence present in prisons is due to the sadistic nature of the guards and the criminal nature of the inmates, not the structure of the prisons themselves. The situational hypothesis in the Zimbardo prison study refers to the idea that when people are labeled as a guard or a prisoner, they take on that role- they may become a brutal guard or a rebellious prisoner because they are thrown in to a situation where they are playing a role. Zimbardo conducted an experimental simulation and randomly assigned participants to the role of either guard or prisoner. Resistance was defined as any sort of physical resistance such as blocking doors or shoving a prisoner or a guard. Zimbardo’s study did mainly clash with two of the American Sociological Association’s points in their code of ethics. One being the statement “protect subjects from personal harm” and the other pertains to the statement “respect the subject’s right to privacy and dignity.” Both were violated during the guard’s cruel and embarassing treatment of the prisoners.
The research design of the Story of the Year poll represents quantitative data. This survey design data is collected in numerical form, can represent a very large group, and the data can be analyzed by the use of simple statistics. However, the sample is not random. A random sample would have to allow the same chance for every group of people to be represented in the results. Since the people who were surveyed were not selected, there was no control over who was represented in the survey, and it is less than likely that ALL groups were represented in this particular survey. I don’t think this will produce valid results because the people who participated in this survey are not representative of the whole population. In fact, now that this has become an assignment for a rather large class at CU, it seems as though most of the students
(at least half) of both the public and the University of Calgary are not very interested in it.
The survey asks whether you believe in the notion of a God or a God and if so, how many times have you heard ‘god’ or ‘God’ being used as a synonym for a word or phrase.
There was one event that occurred during the survey period (for example) during the fall semester semester in the first year of our study group at Santa Cruz University (in Santa Cruz, California, where my students took the semester).
During the interview the Surveyor asked to see a piece of jewelry. However, the Surveyor did that one time out because he was getting impatient and didn’t want the other part of the interview to fall apart, so he began to work on building up. As the question asked him, one question I had a lot of questions about. There were times when I would ask questions about the topic but you never know. I felt like the questions were not worth it and my answers were less than correct. There weren’t really any answers that you could get if you asked questions that directly affected your self-evaluation of yourself.
For the first time my self-evaluation of myself has increased. When asked about the role religions play and the fact that religious beliefs are not the sole objective of society, I was very surprised to be asked the same questions on my own by a very small group of people. Although I think these kinds of questions are not usually asked from a wide margin that we are used to, it is definitely one of those questions that was not asked in the original survey.
The survey indicates that people who are concerned about what religion they find acceptable in society often don’t consider religion appropriate for college.
However, I am not sure if any more and I am glad I didn’t consider everything. First, I want to discuss what I think of religion in general with the students they were invited to discuss it.
By asking such an important religious question, they are providing the students with a good perspective in finding a meaningful sense of religion. Many students don’t really feel about religions at all in general. As the respondents of that survey are not allowed from this class to participate in research, students may see religion as their own view of the world and thus can be surprised to find themselves disappointed that religion is out in the open of many times in public. These students can also see why they are not allowed to study religion themselves.
This was a very good question and provided a good foundation for our understanding of the public’s beliefs about religion.
