Self-Assessment
Prior to law school I have 6 years of college-level writing experience 6 years of professional-level writing experience. My college-level writing experience includes: creative writing, persuasive writing, research papers, executive summaries, and essays. I am proficient in both MLA and APA formats. My professional-level writing experience derives from my previous employment with the Department of Child Support Services where I was responsible for writing letters and emails to colleagues and clients and generating internal memos for upper management. I also have experience preparing legal documents for filing at court (Governmental Summons and Complaints, Amended Governmental Summons and Complaints, Amended Proposed Judgments, and Notice of Motions for Judgment with Facts in Support included). In addition, I completed court preparation on files with brief summaries of the matters that would be heard in court on specific cases for the department attorneys.
I have received extensive feedback on my writing in both my educational and professional writing experiences. My educational writing was evaluated by professors and graded. My professional writing was evaluated by my supervisor and the attorneys that I worked for as they checked for accuracy and detail. In the professional setting, I learned to adjust my writing based on the individual that would be reviewing it to ensure that I met the specific standards that specific person had set forth. At times I may not have always agreed with the feedback that I was given in either my educational or professional setting, but the feedback I received ultimately proved to be useful as I was able to learn new techniques and improve my writing skills.
Depending on the writing that is being completed, I use several processes to develop my work. I almost always begin with an outline and then develop a rough draft. I edit my writing as I go along and once
