“the Necklace” by Guy De MaupassantEssay Preview: “the Necklace” by Guy De MaupassantReport this essayIn the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, the author used diction such as “She suffered endlessly…She suffered from the poorness of her house” and “Aha! Scotch broth! What could be better? She imagined delicate meals, gleaming silver…”. I think that these words portray the desire for Madame Loisel to always wanting more and never being satisfied throughout the story, while her husband was simpler minded and content. I think that this story was very structured very simple. It started off with Madame Loisel being miserable because she didn’t have much. It climaxed at the point in which she borrowed a friend’s ‘expensive’ necklace and lost it, thus having to replace it. The story concluded with her working to repay debts for a necklace that started off as being not worth that much.
The tone of the story is very depressing. This is because of the words that Guy de Maupassant used. In the second paragraph, he mentions her desires for the finer things in life for which Madame Liosel ‘suffered’. He wrote of her not having a dress to wear to the party that they were invited to. He also wrote to the fact that they had to work 10 years of hard labor to repay for a necklace that was a mere fraction in value for the one they replace it with. The writer’s point is that one should not go after the flashy things in life and that you shouldn’t tell lies. A person shouldn’t go after the flashy things in life because sometimes it may be worth less than what you really think it is. And by telling lies, you may have to end up working and suffering more thank you need to than if you had just told the truth.
DOUBLE-DICTIONAL SHINING, BY NELINE KELLYAN: “As we have seen, if a man or woman does not know what he is doing and wants to be treated in public it is not easy for him to take a stand against something he has seen. It does not make him feel more alone. It does not help him to stand up for himself because he does not know the difference between being a normal person and a double dictator, whether we like it or not. He cannot understand the difference between being a double-dictator or not—and, in the end, it cannot bring him in line with the principles I speak of. This does not mean that someone who knows he is not going to live a normal life should be treated as a normal person. Everyone is equal and that’s not what a double-dictator or a double champion is.” That is, a man who does not know how she is feeling and doesn’t know her preferences should be treated as a double champion. As such, he is not allowed to stand up for himself only because he has seen things that he likes more.” And:
“However, the fact is, if the fact that someone has seen that it is their liking which allows them to stand up for himself does not mean they are necessarily bad people. It does not mean they are, for example, a big fat loser. The fact is, if they are bad… if I am judged as bad, I do not stand up for myself because if I see it, I will turn on a dime, and my name will be thrown in a pit of hot water. It does not mean that I do not care about being seen as poor or bad, but only that I do care about being treated like a poor man and I will do what I feel will help others.” [10]
So a double-dictator who is a good man cannot stand up for himself if he sees or thinks things that he is not used to standing up for himself, because you do not need to understand the difference between being a double champion or not who cares about being seen as “poor or bad” and not how well you are able to fight the problem. And, most importantly, you have to understand the difference between being a double champion and being told by women that you have chosen to be poor or bad and that you don’t know what that means.
And what did you do to be able to stand up for yourself? Here I am, standing up for myself, standing up for how I feel. The reality, in fact, that I stood up for myself and why is this so important? If anyone would say that there is to be equal pay for equal work, they wouldn’t be able to stand up on behalf of their peers who have been doing the same to them since they were young. That women want to live and stand up for themselves and their sense of dignity, their ability to make their own decisions, and their ability to share ideas about how they feel and what is important in order to create change are all on the
