He uses realism frequently to create a sense of authenticity and trigger emotional responses from the audience. I will be focussing on sequences from his films; United 93 (2006), The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and Captain Phillips (2013), as I believe that they capture the essence of the realism that Greengrass uses within his work. But what I want to discover is why directors use realism in their work. Is it because the realistic techniques create a sense of authenticity? Which gives a greater, emotional response? Or is documentary film as manipulative as any other traditional film and Paul Greengrass is just as conventional as any other director?
Like any other director, Greengrass wants to achieve a certain emotional response from the audience. Films of the thriller genre often make the audience feel anticipated, anxiety and excitement, primarily due to the typical genre techniques. As The Bourne Supremacy is a part of a trilogy, consisting of the thriller genre, Greengrass has to construct the film in a way to conform to the typical genre techniques. This is to achieve the emotional response he wants from the audience. Despite the consistency of Greengrass work with documentary aesthetic, Greengrass must use cinematic techniques in order to gain the typical emotional response. Does this prove that he is as conventional as any other director?

For a short time, movie film had an established pedigree. In fact, it seems to still be a unique concept in the cinema world, because it is both cinematic and historical. In many cases, film is still the most traditional movie, since it involves something that has been done before in some form or another. Many of the film-making techniques of today’s cinema has to change since, most recently because it was too complex and rushed to get the production up and running. That is because, it has to take several times to make a film that satisfies a person. So how many directors have ever developed this method of motion picture making and who were to succeed them?

When television comes out in October, perhaps the most ambitious of all forms of television production takes place in the United States. With many examples now circulating that have already emerged, American TV is certainly not the norm for most of the world. The best example is the success of the original Star Trek television series of the 1950s and ’60s. The series was filmed in New York and New Jersey by the late-night television company NBC Universal. To the best of my recollection, NBC’s TV program, The View, was the first television show ever created to ever become the highest grossing series of television. Since 2000, the series has aired on TV since its initial airing. That being said, many of the new series have seen a significant increase in viewership, as the show is still airing on the airwaves. The new series of programming have already received significant viewership with more than four quarters of people following an original series of shows based on the show. It may seem strange that so many TV shows are being featured on the program, but there has been an exponential growth of popular culture. Many celebrities and celebrity related programming are gaining popularity in countries all over the world. That is not to say the popularity of the program is not growing.
