James Henry Trotter was a boy who parents were killed in an accident and he was abandoned at the age of four. James has to be cared by two of his relatives that are crazy, named Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. One is a lazy fat woman that sucks the life out of everyone around her and the other is a rude and disrespectful woman. They work James like a slave by making him chop wood, clean the house, and just do things they dont want to do. He is not allowed to come out of the house and is locked in the basement to sleep on the cold hard floor. They dont want him to attend school, to play with other kids, or to go out of the yard. Sometimes they night not even feed him. While chopping wood one day, James meets an old wizard who gives him a small bag of magic green crystals that have the power to solve James problems. However, James falls and spills them into the roots of a peach tree that has never bloomed and is told to get back to work by his aunts. Not to long after a peach appears on the tree and the aunts sell tickets to see it, as it grows about the size of a house. Later on James is invited inside the peach by some insects and worms that swallowed some of his magic green crystals and grew the same size as James. They all roll away in the peach and roll over his aunts while leaving. Then, they float on the Atlantic getting attacked by hailstone, frying pans, and hair oil bottles from the Cloud Men. They finally arrive safely in New York City. All the bugs admired James wit and cleverness and helps build his confidence. In New York, the Mayor, Police Department, and Fire Department thinks they are invaders from outer space.
