Name: Abdullah Class: ENG 110/Sec 001Prof. Khurram AfzalWhy Students Should Wear Uniform at School? According to an article posted in PBS, the popularity of public school uniforms came into being in 1996 when the district school in the Long Beach, California, became the first school to require uniforms. Many people argue that school uniforms are unnecessary and inefficient for making students learn better at school. However, some education experts believe that students should wear the uniform at school because it helps them to be punctual, focus on their studies, and reduce bullying in the school. Many people oppose the uniform policy at public and private schools because they believe that there is no evidence to prove school uniforms are effective. Instead everyone at school should come up with their own styles and have different tastes or preferences. In other words, one likes to wear jeans instead of skirts and so forth. Students through their clothing let the people know who they are, display their creativity and show how unique they are in person. Moreover, it is true that everyone wants to appear neat and clean at the school, but there are chances of getting stains on the clothes, take a lot of time to iron them and above all wearing the same uniform is boring for most of students. In short, school uniforms restrict the freedom of expression and as a result of above restrictions, individuals lose their identity, self-expression and wont be able to explore their talents.
In addition, opponents of uniform policy claim that the fear of being bullied inside or outside the school is really stressful. They argue a student wearing the uniform can easily be distinguished by other people. Inside the school, students most often become the victims of bullying, but outside the school students from other schools will find different reasons to be engaged in the act of teasing and bullying such as colour, body size, or even how they act. In some cases, school uniforms may give a bad reputation to people. For example, students, who are wearing uniforms of a school, reflect the bad image of that school by causing trouble or misbehaving with other people (Lemouse). In similar fashion, students from other schools or gang members may also get into the act of bullying. On the other hand, people who are in favor of uniform policy believe school uniforms help the students to be punctual and attend their class regularly. How? It is quite simple. School uniforms take a little time getting ready for school. On the contrary, it takes a lot of time getting dressed for school with a designer or a casual dress. Students in neat and clean school uniforms are more confident, disciplined and help students stay focused all the times. According to PBS, Bill Clinton in his speech said, “If it means that the school rooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms.”
