Yassir Al SuodIntro to Grad StudyDr. Jadwiga Smith13/May/2014Theatre Review On 26th of October at 8 p.m., I attended BSUs “Pilgrims of the Night” play, written by Len Jenkin, which features supernatural beings and an unconventional plot structure. It shows how all aspects of life connect, reinforcing the theme that we are all someway connected. It also shows that fleeting moments of human contact can have the deepest effects upon us. Its structure is very loosely based on Chaucers “Canterbury Tales”. The play was directed by Colleen Rua and performed at Campus Center Auditorium. In Pilgrims of the Night we meet seven travelers who miss their last ferry and wind up trapped overnight in a ferry terminal during a storm. Poor Tim (played by Frank Laquinta), who runs the terminal, serves as the narrator and, thus, introduces these travelers. In order to pass time, the travelers tell each other stories; their stories range from tales of love, betrayal, space aliens, and made scientists to a career girl that is turned into a zombie by a wicked Caribbean entrepreneur. Each character in this play is on a journey, searching for something bigger, greater or more meaningful than what his or her daily life reveals. The play captures a desire we share for connections to each other and to that we have not yet discovered. The characters are very imaginative and their performance is believable and excellent. Director Colleen Rua has perfectly counterbalanced between the characters different stories and the common theme of the play, thats we are all connected. The play Pilgrims of the Night has a clear focus and the scenes change smoothly. Moreover, the lighting design of Greg Jutkiewicz and the costume design of Maranda Guirleo are breathtakingly awesome and play a vital role in the success of the play. Also, the play is full of abnormal roles that which are a good addition to the play.
