Television advertising cost is based upon the number of viewers that are watching that particular station. I went to KTAB/KRBC and I spoke to Justin Riggan, he is the head sales advertising consultant for that particular television station. He said that the cost of all of the advertising is based solely on the number of people who watch that show at a certain time of the day. The heads of CBS and NBC give the company slots to fill for local advertising. KTAB and KRBC have what they like to call a set cost for a local advertisement. For instance, KTABs morning program CBS This Morning is a morning program that you wake up to and get the morning news. To get a local 30 second spot on the show it will only cost you about $20. Because the show is a show based for and out of Abilene the supply of 30 seconds spots is a lot more. The more spots that are open for local advertising in Abilene, the loser the cost is going to be to be on the air. But the most expensive show that a local can get on the air is going to be a base pay at $750. This show for KTAB is CSI. CSI is the most popular television show on this particular station. The reason why it cost so much for a local to get an advertising add is because the national office will take up more of the commercials and because of that KTAB will only have around a two minute slot to fill for that show. Because the supply of the commercials is so low the cost to get you add in that time spot will cost you more. The dollar amount is only a starting pay, the cost for you to get you add on the air can even be higher. The highest bid will get their add on the air. Other shows have different rates like, Oprah starting pay to get an add on the air is $75, the 5:30 CBS News is also $75. CSI Miami cost $600 to get a local add on the air. Sand Survivor will also cost you $600 to get a 30 second spot. In Abilene KTAB is the most widely watch television station in the Big Country. Because 71% of all the houses in this area watch KTAB it will obviously have the most expensive station to market on. Most other television stations in the Big Country reach only 15-45% of the Big Country (ktab.tv/advertising.htm).
The other television station that Justin works for is KRBC, because KRBC is not as widely watched as its counter part KTAB, the cost of advertising is not as high. To get the same 30 second spot on the air it will cost you $30 to get your local advertising on the Today Show. The most watched show that is on KRBC is ER. To get you advertising shown during this show it will cost you $700. Remember that all of these prices will only be for one 30 second showing of your advertisement. He did say that if you sign a contract with stations for a yearly contract, the price could be adjustable. But basically all of the advertising in the Big Country is based upon Supply and Demand, and the number of companies that want to have their advertisement on the air at that certain time.
