As your instructor, I will support your efforts to develop your reading and writing skills that will enhance your ability to communicate effectively. In this course you will explore grammar rules and writing strategies necessary to develop skills with the Writing Process so that you can produce a well written paper. For example, as we consider different methods of gathering your writing thoughts, we will explore Gabriele Ricoâs theory of clustering, a form of brainstorming for writers.
Throughout this course, you will continue to refine and practice reading and writing skills. Through discussions critiques with your peers, you will focus strategies for reading, mechanics and syntax, and written expression. Your efforts will produce a paper, as well as a number of short assignments that demonstrate the growth of your writing skills. Though much of your work will be individual, you will have opportunities to share in class discussion with your class peers. Strengthening your communications skills, as well as contributing constructive criticism will be the goal of this course.Written communication is the key to success across all disciplines and work environments. Regardless of your field of study, written communication is a necessity and I want to provide you with practical and useful skills that you will need to succeed in the workplace. What you learn in ENGL 099 – Pre-College English will help you succeed in ENGL101 and all your Bryant & Stratton classes and also your careers. Throughout this class, it is essential that you learn that writing is a PROCESS. Writing is never perfect the first time through â and thatâs perfectly normal! You will not produce a perfect paper on your first try; however, it can be achieved! I want to help you discover the tenacity in yourself to keep writing, revising, and working towards a polished final product. With this goal in mind, I want to foster a classroom environment that encourages you to reach for excellence. I look forward to our journey together!Instructorâs Late Policy:Ensuring timely submissions is extremely important for success in online learning. There is an understanding that unexpected events happen and there may be times when you are unable to meet established deadlines. In these situations, the following guidelines apply:Day 1: deduct 5 pointsDay 2: deduct 10 pointsDay 3: deduct 15 pointsIf you face a documented emergency and need additional time, please let me know. No late work will be accepted after the last day of class without instructor approval.Methodology for this Course:          Each week, you will read for knowledge and understanding through the lectures & discussions to help you prepare for each weekâs assignments, quizzes, and projects. You will acquire knowledge by understanding lecture notes, completing your homework, participating in discussion along with reading your textbook and watching supplemental videos. The assessments in ENGL099 provide opportunities by which you can explore strategies for improving your skills in writing (including mechanics and composition), reading, and thinking. In some weeks you will have a chance to Summarize and apply what you have learned in your weekly reflections.
