Introduction
Moderate-discrepancy hypothesis seeks to explain the belief that relates to the visual and audio portrayals among young viewers. In the context of the viewers experience, young children react differently to varying audio and visual portrayals. In accordance to this hypothesis, visual portrays with minimal variations concerned with the childrens knowledge, always attract high levels of the childs attention. When a child is maturing, hi/her variations especially in media preferences start to grow. Education materials that include: computer programs, videos and DVD/CDs, considerably affect the viewers more so during early childhood and infancy in terms of their development intellectually. The effects could either be negative or positive, depending on the method adopted to expose children to visual effects. For example, when one expose a child of a preschool age to designed programs, the effects the baby will undertake will increase their participation in academics and eventually their social skills (Valkenburg & Vroone, 2004). The impact of these effects in their lives is likely to persist until adolescence. The extent, with which the effect influences their various forms of media, depends on the intensiveness of support offered by the parents or caregivers. An infant with an experience of continuous assistance with their environment undergoes minor disruptions in their mental and social development.
Researchers have proved that an infant exhibits certain types of preferences in their choices, which in turn affect their attention when in certain environments. I.e. Children have a strong response action towards sources such as music and words, furthermore the exhibit an element of joy when listening to music. Research also demonstrates that from 4, month old baby, have high responsiveness towards human voice (Valkenburg, 2004). Therefore, media sources such as stories attract a high level of attention from the child.
Childrens interest are most high on moving objects since their visual ability is developing and their preference for particular types of images and objects in testifies. More so moving objects that produce flashing colours and sharp contrast, commands high level of attention from children, as a result of their ability to distinguish different colours.
Television program, more so preschool programs that generally poses brightly coloured puppets and commercials attracts children attention the most. This is as a result of the auditory and visual stimulus present in these programs. Research has shown that a significant of children under the age of five years, often imitate songs, jingles and other audio and vision related materials.
