Hookup Culture and the Sexual Double Standard
The hookup culture can be considered bad for men only in the fact that men will miss out on some job opportunities because women are becoming more independent. This I think is because women are working harder for the jobs than men and it shows in the increase in GPA scores for women. The hookup culture affect women a lot more because it can put a bad impression on women that participate in the hookup culture they will be looked down upon by past generations. I think our generation will understand and accept the hookup culture but past generations are uncomfortable with how women sleep around because they were raised in a more controlling environment where girls that sleep around are looked down upon.
The hookup culture is also bad for women because it forces woman to choose between being part of the hookup culture or being different then most other girl or even an outcast just as Rosin said “They felt trapped between the choice of marrying the kind of disastrous hometown guy who never gets off the couch, and will steal their credit card—or joining a sexual culture that made them uncomfortable. The ones who chose the first option were considered the dorm tragedies, women who had succumbed to some Victorian-style delusion.” (Rosin 10) nobody likes to be limited and I think this is what hookup culture is doing it is creating a rift between certain women because there is no middle ground. This forces women to join a side and create two groups one for “Victorian-style” and one for hookup culture.
The hookup culture can also be bad for both because I think the hookup culture will limit people when they get older because nobody likes to say they love someone and they want to stick together. I hope that we dont have a bunch of kids that dont have one of their parents because of people being scared of commitment.
This is not mentioned in either of the article but the hookup culture can also increase the amount of STD. Even if the two people use a condom it is not always effective there is still maybe a one percent chance of getting it. So if more people have sex statistically the increase of STD’s will increase. The increase in relationships forces people to look good making them feel pressure by the hookup culture just like what Wade said “it’s the relentless pressure to be hot that makes some women feel like shit all the time and the rest feel like shit some of the time” (Wade 1) This doesnt just apply to only women, men also have to worry about there looks so they can be with good looking girls. This pressure puts unnecessary strain on both genders.
The hookup culture can and I think is helping to break down double standards because it makes women sleeping around more common thus making it ok for both genders to say they “dont want anything serious right now”. The times are changing Rosin gave a perfect example when she said “For college girls these days, an overly serious suitor fills the same role an
accidental pregnancy did in the 19th century: a danger to be avoided at all costs,
lest it get in the way of a promising future.” ( Rosin 5) this is a huge statement because it shows the drastic difference of peoples feeling from old generations to now.
The hookup culture is good for both men and women because it can be a good way to relieve stress and have a good time doing it. I think this is overlooked
