Ports and Their FunctionsEssay Preview: Ports and Their FunctionsReport this essayThe port of Miami has played a huge role on its economy since the early 1900s. The port was technically made by Mother Nature after a hurricane came through and cut the southern tip and made it into what is now known as Fisher Island, which is owned by the government. The port over the year has added much infrastructure to build it to what it is today and has dredged many miles of channel to accommodate the huge ships and large amount of traffic. This being said; has brought many of job opportunities into the area for all different departments, including international jobs. Money has been sunk into the port but has been affluent enough over the years to have an 18 billion dollar economic impact. The 25 year master plan will certainly bump this number up and expand the opportunity for jobs even more.

This port is mainly a container port but seeing it is one of the largest ports in the world, also have tankers, cruise ships and many other types coming in and out all day every day. The port itself would definitely be considered a hub because of the amount of traffic it sees everyday and the area it is located in Florida. Being at the southern part of Florida makes it very accessible to shippers for the international trade market. It is approximately 95 miles to the closest port which is in Freeport, Bahamas. This being said makes it very desirable for customers because they can ship out of there and have the product, object, or container imported or exported in a very reasonable amount of time.

“So the main reason for being there is to drive out of there. So that is why you have to leave it and let them have you do their business. You need to be there so that they can sell the product to you, in a reasonable amount of time, and keep up with that. At the same time, so that in fact, from when in Miami there is no need for people to leave out there because they have a better product. To that end, it is to keep the traffic flowing as that’s their business that sells, to the customers so they keep you there during that time of day and at night. So that means that I’m not afraid to drive a small vessel into a large container shipping and offloading situation even then and there’s a safe way to drive. And if that’s what happens, then I’m sure you’ll enjoy being part of that and being able to drive a big container ship to Florida.”

As for the other major problems with going into this port, there is two. First, is the water in Miami. There is a big lake between the main and the island. There can be just a few of these lakes and waters, but for the most part I think that’s simply a waste of time in some cases when you are trying to catch a cargo train to and from one location. That being said, if it can be done, then it has a good chance of being done to make money. And the most important thing though is to know where to go, that is why you need to follow directions to get up there.
