I have listened to bits and pieces of Dr. Kings speech but never the whole speech in its entirety. When I watched the speech it was a whole different experience. In the speech “I Have A Dream” Dr. Martin Luther King spoke of his dream that one day, this great nation that we live in will overcome the racial prejudice between blacks and whites. Dr. King was looking for peace and unity amongst a segregated nation when he delivered this powerful speech. Its was amazing how many supporters were in front of the Lincoln memorial that day, there were both whites and blacks. It was amazing how passionate he was when he spoke. Not only did Dr. King speak of his dream of ending racial segregation, but also advised the black community not to be bitter toward the whites in the United States.
America is a place where every American citizen can and should have the opportunity to achieve the American dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. However this was not the case for many, if not all African Americans. Many African Americans immigrated to this great nation via the slave trade. When the slaves were set free they still were unable to achieve the American dream due to the severe racism in this country. Dr. King talks about the day that Abraham Lincoln set the slaves free by signing the Emancipation Proclamation, but questions whether or not he actually set the blacks free. He states, “One hundred years later the Negros are still not free”. With all the persecution and “WHITES ONLY” signs all over the country, the blacks are living on a lonely island of poverty in the middle of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
When I watched this speech I was blown away by the power in which he delivered it. I had never really known much about Dr. Martin Luther King until now. Once I watched this speech I was moved so much that I decided to do so research about Dr. King and work and found out that he was not the radical that I once thought.
I feel that that the black radical groups exploited Dr. Martin Luther King and his views and the groups used Dr. Martin Luther Kings message to promote the wrong ideas. Many white Americans view Dr. Martin Luther King as a black activist who had racial radical views like some of the activist today(at least most of the people that I talked to). That is not the case at all! Dr. King was a very smart intelligent man who only wanted the best for all of America. Dr. Martin Luther King knew that how the blacks were treated in America was wrong and wanted a change. There is no reason why any tax paying American citizen should be segregated from others due to the color of their skin.
If it wasnt for the Dr. Martin Luther King, this country might be a different place today. How Dr. King changed this county was not only for the good of Blacks but also for every race in this country. He paved the way for all immigrants
