Academic IntegrityAcademic Integrity is a critical aspect of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a research institution with high academic standards and rigor, mission. Why is it necessary for a university to establish a code of conduct? The University of Wisconsin’s answer is in the following quote, “The University of Wisconsin is an institution which encourages the intellectual and personal growth of its students as scholars and citizens. As an educational institution, the University recognizes that the transmission of knowledge, the pursuit of truth, and the development of individuals require the free exchange of ideas, self-expression, and the challenging of beliefs and customs. In order to maintain an environment where these goals can be achieved safely and equitably, the University promotes civility, respect, and integrity among all members of the community. As stated in the Standard of Ethical Conduct, students are expected to exhibit high standards of behavior and concern for others. The University strives to protect and guide the educational community by establishing a Student Conduct Code and student judicial system, which promotes individual and social responsibility” (Electronic).
The code of conduct is a legacy document existent in some of the first universities. Why do Universities deem it necessary to implement such a code? A code of conduct is necessary to inform students about the rules of engagement in the academic environment and attempt to preserve academic integrity and prevent infractions such as plagiarism. The Student Code of Conduct is a collection of rules, guidance, and decisions for student leaders under the auspices of the University of Texas at San Antonio. They allow students to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with a university’s ethical standards, or if they’re going to, be guided by them. These rules are intended to be used by the student leaders to improve the academic environment and avoid infractions such as plagiarism and conflict-of-interest. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTA) is committed to ensuring the safety of public education and the enjoyment of students, and to engaging the student’s environment in an environment that is safe, supportive, constructive, responsible and non-judgmental. The University recognizes that the goal for UTA is to be, in part, a safe environment where the safety of students and the University itself are a key focus. However, to achieve this, the UTA aims to conduct an ongoing review and examination of the student culture and to engage students in their own research, reflection and research to develop a greater understanding of how student conduct should be conducted. It emphasizes student participation in academic activities and academic research so that students understand the implications of their actions. Students who are under the jurisdiction of the Texas Department of Law and Safety on a Title I or III student status are eligible to take an alternative course of study upon completion of one semester of an independent program at the University of Texas System of Higher Education. Any course of study conducted by the Undergraduate Program at the University of Texas System of Higher Education will not qualify as a degree at the University of Texas – Austin or may be taken in a specialized area of law or training. Students who may seek a course to improve their legal ethics are encouraged to call 517-331-1057. Students may also pursue additional courses using the Student Codes of Conduct. The University does not provide this information to students who do not have a Student Code of Conduct at their own expense.
