Evelinas Diary
Dear Diary,
Living here at Reverend Villars is great; he shows me all the love and affection that I could ever ask for. He told me earlier today that he spoke with Lady Howard, my childhood friends grandmother. They want me to come stay with them for a while. I dont know too much about that, I like it here and Im not sure how much I am going to like Howard Grove. The only good side to it is that I will get to see my Maria! I have not seen her in so long! I guess thats all for now!
Dear Diary,
Howard Grove is not that bad at all Maria and I are having a ball! It has been so good to come catch up with her. Lady Howard told us today that Marias father is coming back from sea duty and that we may go get him. She has to send a letter to Rev. Villars to see if I can go along. I hope I can, I really would like to go with Maria and her mother to London.
Cont Ð- The Rev. said it was ok for me to go with them so I guess I will be writing you when I get to London!
Dear Diary,
Tonight was just terrible; I really dont know what to think. First off, Mrs. Mirvan decided that she wanted to take Maria and me to a dance. Ive never been to a dance before so I really dont know what to expect or do. I feel so out of place here with all of their social rules. I was shunned upon when I refused to dance with this guy that I did not like. I didnt know that if I did that, then I couldnt dance with anyone else! I saw this guy that I really liked who I danced with named Lord Orville, but he eventually turned on me too. Maria heard him say something like “poor weak girl!” what does that mean? He obviously didnt think I was too weak not to dance with! I was almost through with him from that point on but he kind of saved himself by sticking up for me when the other guy that I refused to dance with called me “ill bred”, he came back and said “that elegant face can never be so vile a mask!” Im not going to lie, it made me feel pretty good, but I still remembered what he said about me and I really did not appreciate it!
Dear Diary,
I just dont know what is wrong with me. I have been so determined to change what he thinks about me and prove to him that I am not a weak girl like he thinks that I am that every time I see Lord Orville I am at a loss for words. I can ever get what I want to say out right and I just blush like I have never seen a guy before!
Dear Diary,
Things have changed so much since weve returned from London to Howard Grove. The Captain and Madam Duvall can not seem to get a long for anything in this world. The captain does everything in his power to make Madam Duvall miserable. Not saying that she doesnt deserve it, she really doesnt show any class at all, nevertheless, it really makes me uncomfortable and I really do not like it. Madam Duval tells me that she is going to write a letter to Sir Belmont, which is supposedly my father and if he doesnt recognize me as his daughter then she is ready to file a law suit against him. No one here thinks that she is right; everything thinks that it is a very bad decision, but with Madam Duvall I really dont think she cares. It almost seems like she has an alternative motive towards the whole situation, but hey, I dont know, I am just going to try to enjoy my time here with Maria!
Dear Diary,
I found out today that Lady Howard wrote to Sir Belmont to try to defray some of the tension away from what Madam Duvall was trying to pull. She asks him if I could come visit him, but he doesnt want anything to do with me. 🙁
Dear Diary,
Hes at it again; Sir Clement Willoughby is here at Howard Grove. He is really getting on my nerves and he is really aggressive. I dont want him but I guess he doesnt get the point. He also really isnt helping his case when he helps the Captain mess with Madam Duvall and makes her life worse. I am not saying that she doesnt deserve something like that but I also dont agree with what they are doing.
Dear Diary,
Madam Duvall left Howard Grove for a while to visit Reverend Villars to ask if it would be ok if I could stay with her for a little while. This place is nothing like Howard Grove, I really dont see too much of the finer things that I did before. She has introduced me to the Branghtons, which are relatives to Madam Duvall. They have pretty much been with me my entire stay here.
Dear Diary,
Tonight, Polly and Biddy Branghton take me for a walk, and we ended up walking down this really dark street and getting confronted with a group of guys that would not stop harassing us. Sir Willoughby comes out of no where and rescues me. He still isnt that high up on my list but that was a very gentleman thing for him to do.
Dear Diary,
Today I found Mr. Macartney up in his room about to commit suicide. He is a poor poet and his has been very depressed for a while. He had a loaded revolver in his hand and I caught him right in time. After we finished talking he is very grateful that I saved his life.
Dear Diary,
I really dont understand what is going on, I have all of these guys that are trying to win my affection from Tom, Mr. Smith, Monsieur DuBois, and of course Sir Willoughby, but my heart and my
