My Work Experience
I had two work experience placements, both of which were for 1 week each. The first placement was held at Royal Mail in Brentford, the second, in the Metropolitan Police station located in Hounslow.
Royal mail. What can I say? This was truly an experience that not everyone can achieve. Seeing and working in the heart of the business and knowing the functions of the Royal mail is fascinating indeed, however, it’s not something that I can say was worth this valuable week. This was all due to the fact that my field of interest completely differed from the nature of a company like Royal mail.
This company is the postal service in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland that is almost 500 years-old and government-owned. The company is responsible for universal mail collection and delivery in the UK. Letters are deposited in a post box and taken to a post office. Deliveries are made at least once every day except Sundays and bank holidays at uniform charges for all British destinations. First Class deliveries are generally made the next business day.
The first couple days I had to do armature jobs such as sorting and kill offs which is marking the address of where it needs to be posted but if the address is invalid or unknown it needs to be killed off and returned to its sender if the address is available. As we carried on through the week the jobs got a bit trickier as they were more difficult to handle and to keep up with. However, I and my colleagues were lucky as we had short hours compared to other people at different placements such as Burton and Barclays bank.
