Conagra and the Climate Change
Conagra Brands, Inc. is an American packaged foods company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The company made and sold products under numerous brand names that were available in supermarkets, restaurants, and food service establishments (“About Conagra Brands,” n.d.). However, in 2018, the company struggled to create growth in the face of upstart rivals, rapidly changing trends and their own slower-paced cultures. Also, as todays shoppers march to fresher foods that surround the perimeter, eating healthier became an American trend. Beside Part of the challenge was climate change, a drought in California hurt the quality of Bolthouses carrot crop (Hirsch, 2018). Earlier in May 2018, Conagra Brands, Inc. was celebrating its employees’ commitment to sustainability throughout the organization at its annual Sustainable Development Awards. During 2018, their employees created 57 projects which together resulted in more than 9,200 tons of waste reduced, eliminated 1,400 tons of material from packaging, conserved more than 170 million gallons of water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 6,000 metric tons, at the result of millions of dollars in cost savings (“Sustainable Brands,” 2018). The company had tried getting involved in the activities to protect agriculture from climate change. Inevitably, the company was facing an adverse effect of climate change over their agricultural productivity, which causes the decrease in availability or less favorable pricing for certain supplies that are necessary for their products, such as corn, wheat, and potatoes. Unfortunately, this crisis of climate change was one of the reasons that made about 100 people working at Pinnacle Foods, Inc., in Boulder will be laid off by the parent company Conagra Brands, Inc (Joshi, 2019). The company should have tried to navigate another strategy to deal with this issue, and the option of working with global suppliers or partners could be one of the solutions.
