Herbert Croly in the First PersonEssay title: Herbert Croly in the First PersonHerbert CrolyI was born on January 23, 1869, in New York. Both my mother and my father were journalists. My fathers name is DavidCroly and my mothers name is Jane Cunningham. Some of my early on goals included graduating from Harvard University, andbecoming a well-known journalist, both of which were later achieved. After graduating from Harvard University, I became the editorof Agricultural Record. In 1909, I published the book titled The Promise of American Life. In this book Istressed several of my political views, such as the need for a planned economy, increased spending on education, and a society based on“brotherhood of mankind.” Many people believe that this book influenced Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. In 1914, agood friend of mine by the name of Williard Straight, asked me to be the first editor of the New Republic. When the NewRepublic was first published in November 1914, only 875 copies were made. After a year of circulation this magazinepublished more then 15,000. This became a strong supporter of the views of Theordore Roosevelt and the Progressive
-Easter 1916-1917. On July 13, 1940, the New Republic published a book with the title, The End of Prohibition. The following year, New York Tribune-Bureau reported that the publisher had been acquired by the Democratic establishment. In 1940, The New York Times. began the process of acquiring. These men led in the creation of the world’s largest magazine and newspaper. During the 1950 period, World Socialist Congress, had been organized and the top political leaders of the world. The authors had been, and remain, the strongest and most important leaders of the antiwar movement. A great deal had taken place in the U.S. during the years that the two parties were still together. I do not mean, however, to describe the situation with respect to social issues. The world could not be reduced to a short period of time under our own leadership. As for the American workers, the fact that for many years every man was able to do the work and not be threatened, and many men were able to earn a living and a fortune in a short time. As a consequence we, as a society, have become too dependent upon government to be able to pay our rates of living. I do not mean that those who are able to take charge cannot, in a short period of time, find themselves free of any economic consequences. They have found it impossible to do what we demand. Our work has become impossible, and our demands for change could not bring about one change in a society. This situation, at least, was known throughout the political world and has since become known at home especially in the United States. My first act was to help organize and organize a campaign to win a national election in support of the United States government and against the proposed changes that I supported. We were there to hold the ballot. We had the best efforts available. We were also able to defeat several antiwar, ag. issues including the Equal Rights Amendment, the National Defense Act, the Social Security plan and to help elect and elect congressmen. We were unable to accomplish both of these goals. Our main effort was to win on the ground that we were fighting for all the people of this world. We became known in the U.S. Congress as the United Socialist Congress, a group of socialists who worked with other socialists to collect the millions gathered at the United States Congress. We also founded the American Jewish Committee, which helped organize and organize American Jewish organizations. We worked with the United Steelworkers for labor of all occupations and for any cause. Our organizing work began in earnest in 1916 and was continuing for the next few years. In October 1917, the Communist Party of the United States was formed under the leadership of Charles T. Wilson, who had a very large American Communist party in Brooklyn. Wilson continued the group for many years in the form of the “Democratic Socialist League” and became an important partner. We were known as The League of Communist Writers. This group became known as the League of the Communist Workers of the World. In 1923-24, Wilson went to Japan and fought in the World War II. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, and the Nobel Peace Medal was given in 1939 to Robert Moses for his courage, his courage and his perseverance. Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1938. The American socialist movement in the period since 1917 has become a major force in international politics where, for example, in the past two years, a number of socialist groups, including The Socialist Revolution, have succeeded in turning the war on Europe into a major issue in their movement. On the question of who is going to be
*&*8218;the leading socialist groups in the U.S. and Canada, I have been surprised to find that there exists not one single organization that stands in solidarity with, or for, the oppressed people. No such organization exists outside the United States. There is, however, an international organization with many, many members including various political parties, large trade unions, local governments and even corporations. There exists a communist organization, a socialist section in each of the major Western countries, a trade union labor faction, a trade union communist group that is active in every American political party and has its own party and congress which I have never had an opportunity to speak to, and a group that is active in all the major European countries, including the United States. There are also two communist parties in the U.S. The International Committee of Communist Political Women (ICWW-American-American, which I have been unable to speak to since the date of my first press release and at that time, and ICW-American-Canadian, which I was unable to speak to because I had to resign during a meeting of congressmen in late February or early March. I had to leave without an
') a discussion with the ICW-American-Canadian. I could see that ICW and American-Canadian are very different groups, and that they may have very different interests, but they share a very basic and deeply held and national moral values. They do in fact differ sharply on the various issues of capitalism. I could very well see that they all have different interests. They have different aspirations but they seem to have a certain common spirit. They seem to be very committed to improving the condition of the poor, and that is something they have done quite successfully. When the socialist and communist parties reach an agreement, the left (the communist parties) have to respect and negotiate with those who do not agree with them, including those who are the most radical, especially the extreme right wing, but they do that by no longer being afraid of the revolution, by the working class and workers. The working class and workers would not be a part of that. They did very well not just because they have the revolutionary courage, but also because they seem to have really been able to put things into motion. They would like to get as much food and as little waste as possible, and, especially with the working class, they do it through strikes. They have not been happy either because they have lost their sense of their identity, their pride, so they go on with their lives a rather than, with their lives, in a manner that makes you feel that you are only the weak portion of a large bourgeoisie. Now, the right wing has to go to far lengths to destroy and to get rid of the so called “real capitalists” who are making a great deal of money and who try to destroy capitalism just by using the same tactics and tactics to bring down wages in the working class. If that turns out to be possible, they have to go in to work. After all, after all, they have the opportunity to put the capital behind them, to go to labor camps. It was said that socialism is not necessary. It is only possible in socialism to build up a socialist society. So in this regard, there can be great difficulties because while they try very hard to make it work for them, we have to keep our eyes on the problem which is one of capitalism and the capitalist system. We are going to have to do much more than try to kill capitalism. We have to build socialism. We need to build socialism a lot because we are being led by a very radical movement who are the most far right wing of the capitalist class. There is no other movement which will take the Communist Party of America to work in the revolutionary and radical positions. So, although we are quite far together in these areas, we have problems and we have some problems. We already have two divisions. The left divisions are in the socialist party’s main bloc and in its core unit. The right division in the communist party is in the trade unions and in many other movements in the capitalist world. This is very much in agreement with the general opinion of the left to which I refer (from this perspective), that the only thing that matters is their differences with the right. There are lots of workers coming forth who are really, really angry with the working class, or with the government, or with socialism, or even with those very radical things, with their ideas. They want government to stop them, destroy their interests, weaken their movements, sabotage and take over their country. These are the main differences between the left and the right. The left and right are at a loss to understand what goes on in the countries and the conditions that are holding them back. The countries that they love, like Russia and China, which all
that I know about, are basically ruled by the capitalist class, and the country that they are in, not through the struggle that they organize, but through the actions they make among the people. This is the struggle for the destruction of all these oppressions of the working class, the oppression of the working class that they are attempting to wipe out. They are trying to destroy their real interests and their fundamental rights in exchange for letting those who are working for them make a mess of their real lives. This is very simple.
How many of these are left-wing groups on the ground in these countries? Is there any of their members, other than the ones that I am told to contact, out there?
What are a number of these left-wing groups and what does it mean?
There is no direct government in these countries. There are a number of groups that are still active, and this only seems to be growing, but not all. A few are being established in the country right now, but in general, they are a political movement, not a mass movement, very conservative, very small or
