Justinian was an emperor who tried to re-conquer Roman lands to the west. Then he ordered a team of Greek and Latin scholars to compile and simplify the laws. Third, he undertook a massive building program in Constantinople.
The Justinian code is 5,000 laws arranged by topic of Justinians scholars, thought to be useful for Byzantium. France and other countries in Western Europe follow Justinians code as a guide on legal questions concerning justice, property, marriage, and divorce.
In 1054 A.D. the Eastern Orthodox Church broke off because there were too many differences between the Byzantine Christians and the Western Europe Christians. An example of this is the Western European priests who were not allowed to get married, but the Byzantine priests were. The Eastern Christian priests conducted services in many of the local languages, however in the Western Churches the priests only told their sermons in Latin.
