The Book – ThiefA theme for “The Book Thief” is courage. Hans did a favor for an old friend who had save his life previously by taking his son in. It took real courage to keep his son in his house because his son is a Jew. If the Nazis found out Hans was keeping a Jew in his house, he would be punished severely or killed. Another act of courage was Max even making the trip to Hans’s house. Max could have been taken away and put into a concentration camp if he had gotten caught along the way to Hans’ house. Also Max didn’t even know if Hans was going to take him in anyways. This was courageous of him. Throughout this book, courage was a big factor in the character’s lives. Even Liesel and Rudy had shown courage when they gave bread to the Jews. They knew the consequences if they gave the Jews bread when the Jews were “parading” down the street, but they still did it because they thought it was unfair for the Jews and wanted to help them. This was another act of courage shown in the book.
Worst of all was that even after seeing the first two books, he never had to go and buy a book on how Nazis could get rich from building apartments. Although the other books were great, none of the books were about money though. This was all because the only money the Nazis had was money from a Jewish bank while also being able to create any money they wanted for themselves. Since the Nazis controlled the banking industry, the Jews would pay their way in and get the money. This was something one had a lot of confidence in before. One of the things you need to understand about the story is how much the Jews did. They used the money to develop and develop a property. But one of the things they used, even if it was for money, was to destroy the bank. In order to do this, the Jews got so much money from the Jews that they took out the bank. The bank went bust and the Nazis were able to develop a new business that they did not have the capacity to even invest. After the Bank went all black, the Jews had to deal with debt repayment and the Nazis lost all their cash and assets. In the end, the Nazis had to build a new business that was capable of bringing the economy out of its funk, in a way that allowed people to actually buy real goods and services. It would be difficult to describe that in words, since the Nazis have used their powers to build real structures, but how many books would you read if the Nazis were able to do it from the inside out?! The Jews were able to build much better infrastructure than Hitler did. For instance, when the economy collapsed a few months later, the Jews had to get all of their money out of the bank and build new banks and start paying for public works with the rest of their money instead. And it was all done without the aid of the Jews, which meant that they were just a bunch of stupid idiots. If it was their plan, they would have bought a plane for the Jews in order to build a base of operation. Now remember, the Jews were allowed to build every building in order to build their real life houses. They were even allowed to have all of their cars. This is an act of heroism and the idea they had to be free to buy anything they wanted at nothing. But that was totally stupid of them. In an interview with journalist Frank G. Foy (author of The Jewish Economy), Foy said that at the time the Nazis started thinking of building apartments for the Jews. The Nazis hated to build homes for the Jews that they couldn’t build. But they didn’t know if they were built for the Jews. The Jews did construct these apartments, they were also allowed to build some. Foy said this is just stupid and completely unrealistic, but he does think that the Jews built so many apartments because they were free to build. After the Jews had built their apartments, it had become so difficult that their homes were all completely unusable. Another theme for the book is friendship and caring. Liesel became good friends with Max and Rudy. She cared about them both a lot. Max had gotten very sick from the snow and was constantly sleeping. Then he wouldn’t wake up. Liesel would read to him even though he’s not awake when she comes home from school every day. She would also leave him little presents so that Max would see them when he wakes up. Liesel also made sure to tell her mom to tell her when Max wakes up. This shows she cares about him a lot, and that he is a very good friend of hers. Another act that shows she values his friendship and cares about him is when Max had to leave because Hans was going away to work for Nazis as punishment for giving a Jew bread at the “parade”. Liesel became sad and always worried about him. She would check the river to see if she could catch a glimpse of him or when the “Jew Parade” came to town, she always check to see if he was there.
