Volleyball is an active sport played by many individuals around the world. It has been played since 1895 when the game was first officially introduced by the inventor William G. Morgan. Over the years after the invention of volleyball many new rules and regulations as well as events and national leagues were formed. The sport was first known as mintonette and the name was later changed when a spectator, Alfred Halstead noticed the volleying nature of the game and the name of the game became known as volleyball. When first introduced by William G. Morgan, the net was only 66 high, according to wikipedia.org the game of volleyball is now played on courts “18 meters long and 9 meters wide, divided into two 9 x 9 meter courts by a one-meter wide net placed so that the top of the net is 2.43 meters above the centre of the court for mens competition, and 2.24 meters for womens competition.”
In 1897, the very first rules for volleyball were recorded in the “Official Handbook of the Athletic League of the Young Mens Christian Associations of North America.” The rules were then later revised by the YMCA and the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1912, “the number of players was set at six per team, the size of the court was increased to 35 by 60 feet, and rotation of players before service was established.” The game of volleyball was increasingly being improved upon and was also being adapted so that young adults were to play and enjoy it more since volleyball was a sport that was first introduced to older men at the YMCA by William G. Morgan. Volleyball became so popularized that it became very well known internationally as well as nationally. It was bought overseas by Americans to European nations and to as far as Asian nations. In 1928, the U.S. Volleyball Association (USVBA) was founded and many of the new rules set forth by the YMCA and the USVBA was spread to other nations.
