Abstract
Name resolution is an important part of computer networking. It stores numeric host addresses in a more human friendly format. DNS is the most common protocol used for name resolution. Pioneer Hospital needs the addition of a DNS server to its new network. This document will explain the benefits of DNS as well as the installation and configuration procedures.
A new server will be added to the Pioneer network to act as a DNS server. Here is the updated network diagram:
The first step in creating a DNS server is to install the DNS software on the server. In Windows Server 2003 open the “Manage Your Server” application and select “Add or remove a role”.
Verify that the listed steps have been completed and click next. In the list of server roles highlight “DNS server” and click next. The application will show a summary of what is to be installed. It should show only a DNS server installation and configuration. After the installation is complete, click next to start the configuration.
The first setting tells the server whether or not to use reverse lookup zones. Reverse lookup zones are translate IP addresses into host names. It is not needed for the Pioneer network, so the first choice should be selected.

Because this server is maintaining the zone, dynamic updates are not needed at this time.
