Triumph Of The Will was directed by Leni Riefenstahl. There are many propagandist techniques used to advance the event in the film. On 5 September 1934, Adolf Hitler again flew to review the assembly of his faithful followers. All the people united as one to praise Hitler. He has absolute strength and power, his energy cannot be challenged. This film is a propaganda, here are three reasons why.
Firstly, the opening scene shows Hitler as a mysterious and all powerful leader. Hitlers plane is flying through the clouds, giving a sense of being “above it all”, and the clever filming of the crowds watching Hitlers movement on the streets give the impression that every street Hitler drove on was full of people who admire him. The opening scene was produced by four shots; the first two shots show the old buildings of the city and then a German flag therefore representing the traditional Germany. The following two shots show Hitlers plane and a symbol of the German Nazi Party. This link the idea of old changing to new. With the clouds on the side of the plane, Hitler is created as a mysterious but all powerful ruler.
Secondly, the fire in the movie not only symbolizes knowledge, also propaganda. Everyone hold fire in their hands, thousands of men are walking with hopes, fire symbolizes knowledge. Hitler was created as a god to the Germans. He is like the light, brings hope and knowledge to educate all Germans. However, the reality is, Hitler is not the light, but the fire which is very dangerous and may cause death to the citizens. The fire as a symbolism gives us the false appearance of Hitler as a perfect leader. However, the Germans were happy in the knowledge.
Thirdly, the speech in the movie is Propaganda. “Our party remains as firm as this rock and will not be divided by any force in Germany.” This shows Hitler as a unselfish leader who is thinking about the benefits for citizens, not for himself. “It is our will that this state shall endure for a thousand years. We are happy to know that the future is ours entirely!” this shows Adolf Hitler is a leader who think of the future and the development of the country, however, he is thinking only for his absolute power.
In conclusion, the movie Triumph Of The Will is a propaganda. The use of different techniques show the absolute power Hitler and the cheery Germans. When people think Nazis they would think about the holocaust and the second World War. However, in this movie, we have no clues about the evil Nazi, all we can find is their glory days. Our views for Hitler is changing through this film.
