A sequence of memories alters the story to a prior time, when Solomon, living in New York with his wife and children, assents work from a couple of white men to play the violin in a festival. In response, Epps comes to Epps’ ranch where he is forced to meet his fiance, a man named Daniel Vickers. He meets him with the possibility of having sex with him, though he is skeptical. Daniel is determined to kill Epps, and after convincing Epps he could save him, Epps and Daniel get together under a tree and start to rape Patrick. Daniel is shot by Epps at gunpoint whilst doing so.Patrick is badly hurt, so Epps decides to kill him. Epps, who has just given up on his relationship with Patrick and has instead started living in fear, decides to start a business in Tennessee. There, he finds some slaves. This is all part of Epps’ plan, to have them slaughtered and shipped to Florida.Epps is still trying to stop Patrick, though he is later forced to admit that he only got married to Patrick during a time when he needed to take care of his brother, which also happened. Patrick’s brother, John, took a gun to Patrick’s head.Epps, still conflicted by Dax Epps’ use of the Confederate flag and his desire for to kill Epps due to his family’s history, starts to realize that he is not the kind of young man he wants to be. He kills Patrick, and Epps returns home.Backup plan: after Patsey dies
