Affirmative Action
When asked to define the meaning of affirmative action I felt that the journal that
best defined it was written by BUSINESS LINE written on June 30, 2006, which states
that the affirmative action concept, which has for long triggered a debate in the United
States, requires positive steps to be taken to provide equal employment opportunity
by ensuring diversity in the workplace by hiring different minorities and women in the
work place. According to The Forward, which was written on November 17, 2006,
Michigan voters chose to end affirmative action preferences based on race or gender
in education, government jobs and government contracting. But it also states in the
journal that this could have ended the national debate on affirmative action. It states that
the debate is dying out in two senses, first that the fighting is dying out, and second
fewer are paying attention to the fighting that is occuring.
When asked my opinion on affirmative action I would have to say that I am
against it. Like Ty Schwoefferman stated in the Oregon Daily Emerald on October 18,
2006, affirmative action has gotten so outrageous in some areas that it has really
started to become ” racism in reverse.” It was claimed by him that it was hypocritical
and that some critics argue “reverse discrimination” when attacking a particular policy
that isnt working or benefiting them. I agree with his insight on this subject. I feel like
universities around the country have decided to give scholarships to minorities and
women that have the same qualifications as a white male over the white male is just
unfair and unjust. Like
