The one thing that surprises me today is that even though our culture has struggled for equality there is still a lot of separation within the African American race. As a young child growing up I did not experience any racism because I was not living in a diverse environment. Now that I am an adult and I have learned the history of our people, I cannot believe how we still have a long way to go.
There is a lot of tension among African Americans a weird hostility of sorts. It is sad to see a dark skinned and light skinned African American not liking one another because of there different shades. A successful person of my culture likes to gloat in their success and does not want to see another one of the same ethnicity reach the top. Now, each and every African American of the world is not this way but through my experience as well as experience of my friends and family this is how it is. I live in a world today where I can walk pass another African American woman and she will turn her nose up or frown. This is not the same when I walk pass another woman of a different culture, even if that woman does not speak she will still react with some sort of positive gesture.
As I mentioned earlier, soul food is a major subject among the African American community. This food originated during the slavery era when the masters would give the worst part of the animal to the slaves to eat. The slaves would then prepare the food in a unique way that would allow something like pig intestines to taste good. A lot of African Americans die from heart disease and diabetes due to eating this type of food, but it is difficult to not prepare your food in such a way that your were brought up accustom to.
In conclusion, some cultures have traditions that are looked down upon simply because there is no understanding of why people from different backgrounds are doing things a different way. Yes, it would be smart to eliminate fried pork and a long list of
