This book was originally published in 1933 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. African Americans of his day were being brainwashed, rather than being taught, in American schools. This causes African Americans to become dependent and to seek out second-rate places in the greater society that they are a part of. He challenges his readers to do for themselves regardless of what they were taught. A quote from the book states “History shows that it does not matter who is in powerthose who have not learned to do foe themselves and have to depend solely on others never obtain any more rights or privileges in the end than they did in the beginning.” This quote defines a lot. If you dont know anything you cannot do anything for yourself; giving others the power to control you. Another quote states “No man knows what he can do until he tries.” This quote basically is self explanatory. Theres nothing to a failure but a try. Theres nothing more important for a black to
have than his education. Lastly another quote from this book states that “to handicap a student by teaching him that his black face is a curse..” Just because of the color of the black skin you is a curse and you cant learn as a student. This quote his basically motivation for the black man to get his education.
