The continent of Africa is a very unique place; it is the only place where there have been over 15 genocides and over 10 civil wars in one continent. People may ask, “why does this happen only in Africa?” and the main reason is European Colonialism. Throughout African history European countries have come into African, set up governments, and created social classes. These social classes that have been created made one group better than another, which caused the Rwandan Genocide. Belgium came into Rwanda and set up a colony inside it. The Belgians made the Tutsi group more powerful than the Hutu because they looked whiter ethnically to the Belgians. Of course the Hutus didn’t like this at all being the lesser group in the country. Later on the Hutus began to be liked more by the Belgians and then gained more power. Since the Hutus had more power and wanted revenge for what the Tutsis did to them, they started to kill all the Tutsis creating the Rwandan Genocide. If European colonialism had not taken place inside Rwanda this genocide would have most likely never occurred because before the Belgians the Hutus and Tutsis lived next to each other in peace.
In the Rwandan Genocide, Tutsis were shot, raped, beaten, burned, and many other harsh ways of killing or torturing. Tutsis were the hated group of Rwanda because they looked whiter ethnically. Rwanda Genocide victims should be remembered because of what they have been through. This group of people was killed for a reason that they can’t help. Victims that are currently alive should be helped to rebuild their homes if they have been destroyed and also try to find their family if they are alive. Family is the most important thing to help get stronger.
The Darfur Genocide left many people without homes, food, and water. While watching the movie “ Devil on Horseback” one man said he depends on America to provide him with food and shelter. This is one way the Western world could help Africa.
