First of all I would start with the parents and discuss the issue they have with each when rewarding or discipline there children. That each parent most supports the other no matter what the issue may be. When parents work together to support their children there will be better and 100 percent completion in every day task by their children. Their mother most learns to talk to their children and not downgrade them when she is using negative verbal words. The farther most be the enforcer at times and not just relay on the wife to do all the discipline and raising of their two children. This is where I would introduce the Piaget theory. I will talk to them about his Stages of Cognitive Development.
The first stage is Sensori-motor (Birth-2 year olds). The characterized by differentiates self from objects. Recognizes self as agent of action and begins to act intentionally: e.g. pulls a string to set mobile in motion or shakes a rattle to make a noise. Achieves object permanence: realizes that things continue to exist even when no longer present to the sense. (Atherton, 2010)
Second stage is Pre-operational (2-7 years old). The characterized is by learning to use language and to represent objects by images and words. Thinking is still egocentric: has difficulty taking the viewpoint of others. Classifies objects by a single feature: e.g. groups together all the red blocks regardless of shape or all the square blocks regardless of color (Atherton, 2010).
Third stage is Concrete operational (7-11 years old). The characterized is to think logically about objects and events. Achieves conservation of number
