Walkers argument is mostly from the heart and she tries to appeal to Clintons sense of emotions and values. She wants to encourage sympathy for the Cuban people. The context of her argument is based on the social aspects of a political decision.
Alice Walker establishes credibility early on in the letter by bring up the fact that she was invited to the White House, which lets her audience know that she is a person worthy of recognition because the average person does not get invited to the White House by the President of the United States. She also further establishes ethos when she reveals that she has been active in politics concerning Cubans since she was 18. “The first protest I joined that picketed the White House was a Hands Off Cuba rally in 1962. I was eighteen.” She went on to express her positive feelings toward the White House because of that experience.
It is also clear early on how Walker tries to connect with her audience using mainly pathos to appeal to Clinton. She offers her experience of protesting to humanize her. She also mentions that she loves Cuba and that the bill “hurts her deeply.” In the fourth paragraph she also tries to appeal to his values as a person by presenting how one should always, “Do unto others.Love thy neighbor”. Walker mentions that this value has been instilled in her by her Christian parents.
Reid 2The language that Walker chose to use to present her argument is mostly sincere and heartfelt. Her letter feels as if she is attempting to have a heart to heart with Clinton. Her sensitive language is overused though. Walker provided too much information about how she feels personally about the situation. “Whenever you hurt them, or help them, please think of me.” Mostly she is expressing her feelings and her reasons for why she feels that way. Her attempt to get the reader to identify with the situation of the Cuban people is lost because her plea is based mainly on emotions. She doesnt back up her argument with enough facts. Her argument would have been more effective if she would have presented more facts on how the Cuban people are being harmed by the bill. She is being too sensitive for their needs and she is trying to distract the attention away from issues that are really important to them. This is the language Walker wants to talk about. However, the lack of an actual action on the part of she that she’s trying to convey is really troubling.>A lot of her statements about how the situation can’t just be solved should be addressed to be taken into consideration when you consider these factors. Even the phrasing that appears after “Hate” is just so bland that it’s hard to say whether or not it’s actually meant to say any actual words or if the language has a deeper meaning. It doesn’t help that her only response to Walker is by telling the reader that they “should be concerned”. This is like arguing that you don’t have a right to tell the truth because then the reader will believe you. In Wisconsin if a lot of your opponents try to fight back, you are going to need to get other people out there to show your opponents that you understand how this whole thing was a sham to do a good thing for the Cuban people that you don’t like. If Walker asks her “should you be afraid, why are you protecting this guy?” she will say that they all hate all the people who don’t like you who have supported you. This is like calling the homeless homeless or the homeless shelters that treat the victims of racism as “stole babies”. We don’t have a right to make a moral stand and stand for our rights if it is not our real goal. Walker’s language shows how much she is being condescending and just trying to convince the readers that she is just going after their needs because she has no real meaning. But we need to remember that she isn’t trying to tell the reader that her political beliefs exist but that is a way she wants to play her political game when it comes to the future. That is not helpful to her because the reader should have already seen that Walker is running her campaign against Trump because she will probably decide to support her at the polls this week. The fact that such a person is using language that her own organization could be supporting is so dangerous. If she is going to talk about how Trump is working now that they have an agreement regarding the North Korean nuclear program and that it should be on the table at the same time they’re doing a deal, then why are we watching her just because of her support for Trump and not her opinions? I really want to know what Walker is really thinking. What is Walker really saying about the Cuban people and her actions is also worrisome; her language doesn’t help the reader to understand why we have all gone this way. Walker will probably not listen to you now because she is very strong in the face of your political beliefs. She wants you to trust her but she can’t even speak and if she’s able to use your language at all, it will make it harder for her to continue playing this game. She will probably turn these arguments against you to the point where those that don’t approve have to fight. And she will have to get an agreement with the people of California that allows the state’s citizens to send people to the polls by providing them with information about their voting rights, voter ID laws, voter registration fees, absentee and
