Journal Entry Two
As a young girl in high school, this author was in a program called PAL. It was designed to prepare high school students for the job environment. Every Wednesday the students will miss school to go work at a career sites specific to that students job interest. One of the many sites this author volunteered at was American Cancer Society.
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization that services the Las Vegas Area. This organization is dedicated to eliminating cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service (American Cancer Society, 2013) The American Cancer Society focuses on patients who are suffering from cancer. They provide information to patients on ways to get well, stay well, they are finding cures to prevent cancer, and they provide access to care (American Cancer Society, 2013). Once a patient is diagnosed with cancer, he or she may be feeling scared and alone; the American Cancer Society is there to provide support to the patient. They are there to provide compassion and care, see that each patient receives individual care, and stride to curing each one of their patients (American Cancer Society, 2013). When this author was a young girl and volunteered in this program, she remembers each career site that she visited the norm was to put together information broachers to hand out at the upcoming events. At the American Cancer Society the volunteers sat in a small room, the coordinator provided refreshments for them while they put together information packets. When lunchtime came they ordered pizza for everyone. Out of all the places this author visited, the American Cancer Society was the most generous to their volunteers.
The American Cancer Society services patients with every type of cancer known. This can range from Breast Cancer to Prostate Cancer. The reason this Author chooses both of these types of cancer is because her grandma died from breast cancer and her father was treated and cured of prostate cancer. This author had many family members affected by Cancer, which is why she chose to volunteer as a child here and why she will continue to support the organization as an adult.
