The letter ” In Response to Executive Order 9066,” by Dwight Okita is the description of a little girl who is very overwhelmed by the American culture. Reading furthermore of the text we can see how greatly the girl is affected as she states that her best friend is a white girl named Denise. She has been affected by her best friend simply because her family culture is completely different from her friend Denise. The little girl in the story also sees herself as part of the american world because she states activities that an American would do with her friend, Denise. For example, her and her friend watch boys together. The little girl “feels funny using chopsticks” because its not an American trait, but she loves hotdogs. Though this little girl in not American she still acts and feels like an American.  Have you ever thought about the famous American Identity? If you dont know what American Identity is then you probably been hiding under a rock, but Ill tell you a little about what the meaning of it is. American Identity is what its like to be “American”. For instance, some foods would be considered an “American Identity” is hot dogs or cheeseburgers etc. because we, as Americans often eat it while some other countries might be confused or eat it but rarely. Anyway, In Okitas poem, American identity has more to do with how you experience culture than with where your family came from. Both Okitas poem and Cisneross short story show that culture and physical appearances do not make what it means to be American.
In the passage, “Mericans”, the first sign of American identity that is noticed by this short story is the relatives in the style of traditional American names like “Auntie” and “Uncle”.
