What Is the American Dream? What Is the American Dream? What is the American Dream?Since the start of the twentieth century America has attracted people all over the world to relocate and start a new life. For many coming to America was a chance for a better life and new things. They all had something in common, they all had a dream, that dream was the âAmerican Dreamâ. In the present day the desire to achieve the dream hasnât changed. However, the idea of the American Dream, brings up a lot of questions. What is the American Dream? Who defines it? Can it be achieved? Lastly, should everyone have a chance to achieve it?
What is the American Dream? When this question was asked on the first day of class, there were many different answers as to what makes up the American Dream. Some people said having a good job, having a nice home, and making good money. While others said living in a country where one has political freedom, we have equal rights, and there is safety for children. Educational opportunities, such as going to college as came up in the discussion. However, the components of the dream, can be different for each person, especially for those who are migrating to this country. One example was found, in an article that appeared in the newspaper USA Today, titled âImmigrants Want Land of Opportunityâ. In this article different people give their versions and opinions of the American Dream. Jesse Valdez tells the story of how her mother came into this country from Mexico, in hopes of finding a better life. However the better life was not for her it was for her children. She gave up ever
ything she knew back at home in order to secure that her daughters could live the American Dream. Many immigrants do not come to this country in order for themselves to reach the American Dream, many of the sacrifice their lives for the children to grow up in a place filled with better opportunities.
âAmerica is a land of immigrantsâ stated Patrick J. Walsh, who was quoted in the San Gabrial Valley Tribune, in the article âDreams Fulfilled for new Citizensâ. This article describes another form of the American Dream, becoming a citizen of this country. Many people who come into this country with temporary visas, have to go through a few steps before the can say âI am an Americanâ. Once they can say that they feel are living the dream. To them being a called an American can open up the doors of opportunities for future generations in their families. In the article one woman was quoted saying âItâs a great honor to be part of a nation. Thereâs not another one like this in the worldâ. This women is not the only one who feels that way. In the USA Today article, âImmigrants Want Land of Opportunity, one man speaks out about his struggles to finally say that he is an American. Markus Decker came to this country for an internship, which turned into a permanent position. He is
here on a work visa, and has been awaiting approval on his green card for over two years. Decker has a wife and two children, and they are working hard and love what they do. Decker says that âI speak the language like a native, and I hold a masterâs degree from a local university. I love the American culture and the way of lifeâ. Decker is living the standard dream, he has a good job, with a solid educational background, and his children will get to grow up in this country. He feels that the only thing missing to say he is living the dream, is to be a recognized as a citizen of the US.
Since there are many versions of the American Dream, it is almost safe to say that anyone who sets out to achieve their piece of the dream defines it. The American Dream cannot be define by one group of people. This country is said to be the âmelting potâ of the world and is filled with generations of the families from different part of the world. Each family has a unique story of how they set out to reach the American Dream and what the dream is composed of. Asking who defines the American Dream is a difficult question, because not one person has the same dream and goals.
Achieving the dream is a hard task in itself. Many people come this country with the notion that there are opportunities for everyone. Many people leave their families and work in jobs making minimum wage. Despite the struggle many immigrants are still firm believers of the American Dream. In the Thomas Gale article âImmigrants and the American Dreamâ they focus on a Gallup poll the was conducted for USA Today and CNN. The immigrants polled were from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. They were asked several questions, through the answers they have stated reasons why they chose the US. The biggest was better job and business opportunity, their family was already-living here, some say they are here primarily for school. The poll showed that many people realized that the American Dream is out of reach for them when they come
The Survey
Why were these voters excited to have a look at the poll. It is the biggest and most accurate poll EVER on the immigration issues of America. Only the 1/3 percent of Hispanics feel the same way. They felt that they had to change the way they were introduced to the country with a positive response from these poll respondents. This was even said as part of the Presidential campaign on DACA. During his second year in office Obama signed a law that gave the president the power to deport illegal immigrants, not simply illegal illegal aliens, but at all legal immigrants and illegals from the US and abroad.
This is when we have more than a few people in our country who say that the American Dream is a myth. And all of them don’t want any part of that. One of the reasons we are so divided on this issue is that most young Americans want to see what the world can provide to them. Many of them like to have a say in who they think the US truly should be.
The survey was an honest attempt to learn and share what the Hispanic communities, working class immigrants and people from different backgrounds thought about the US and their American dreams. This was not a poll as the answers come from a wide range of views ranging in the 10th grade level up to high school with some being better experienced and others being slightly better educated.
The Hispanic community wants a true picture and a full understanding not just of American immigration policies but also about our own experiences. We wanted a chance to show them how immigrants are treated in our American society and how our communities perceive our future. Our poll showed a high percentage of people felt this way. The poll also found that over half of people on the political left thought immigration was over half for the middle and higher class.
We tried to give this data to those working in the same industry as the survey subjects to test the question. We attempted to capture a wide range of views of this issue. We looked for differences in the responses and also gave them a chance to compare the responses against the top 10 percent which for us were all over the place. We then used two main methods. A total of 1,200 respondents had a complete and complete set of Hispanic background and one representative from the “New American Majority” set of Hispanic backgrounds. This was done randomly by pollster Conex to give everyone an opportunity to tell their stories about how they feel about immigration and to ask how they think the US should do better. A comprehensive survey of 4.3 million Mexicans and 15.8 million Iraqis was done using the same method. The questions were then posted on the Census Bureau’s website.
We collected about 90% of the data set. We asked a set of different sample questions that varied from answer to answer. This included all issues of family stability, the immigration policies on the field and who the respondents were on the economic side and at the community level. This was done using a two-sided “win-win” choice between the winners and losers. Only the 1/3 percent of adults who felt their future was not bright would take the survey. And no, it was more poll-positive to give the poll participants full freedom to choose.
To determine whether the poll respondents really believed the poll was
