Barton wasn’t a nurse but she helped wounded soldiers at the front. The more battle worsened, the more soldiers got wounded and it resulted in shortage of emergency and medical supplies which convinced Barton to think about an organization for emergency relief. Barton’s mission was to gather volunteers to help not only nationally but also disaster victims internationally. In 1900, first charter of the American Red Cross was granted by the U.S Congress, which made it responsible for providing services to armed forces and relief to disaster victims, at home and abroad.

American Red Cross is a non-profit corporation which makes no representation in the financial or other decisions presented by its members or management. Although our organization has a strong tradition of providing more than 400,000 individual Red Cross members the best resources are available to aid their training, medical, mental health and rehabilitation, and many other humanitarian needs.
It is my understanding that this is a 501(c)(4) organization. The public is entitled to receive donations of the very same amount for the same services and benefits that the members of this organization, through their own contributions, receive.
