Every 28 hours 1 unarmed black man is killed by police, that’s 2 times the amount of people killed in the columbine school shootings. And in 2 years more unarmed black people are killed by police then British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
Some people would argue that they are just doing their job and that in all of the cases of police killing minorities are justified as they were threatened and were acting in self-defense, and this is supported by the law. In Florida there is the stand your ground law “stand-your-ground law states that an individual has no duty to retreat from any place they have lawful right to be and may use any level of force, including lethal, if they reasonably believe they face an imminent and immediate threat of serious bodily harm or death.” this law has made acceptable for police officers to defend themselves by any means necessary even if it means taking another life.
Most people argue that the stand your ground laws allows people to get away with murder and acts as a death warrant for innocent civilians, who victims are of police brutality.
Many would put forward that it is race related, and that it is almost always minorities that are the victims of police brutality. Black people are 26 times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people. This shows that it is a race-related problem but also that there is a gun problem.
Officers do have guns but also have tasers and pepper spray; some would argue that the tasers dont work. However in the UK the police are only armed with pepper-spray tapers and a baton and they are able to do just as good as American police. This shows us that it is not the regular civilians that are the problems. The problem is that the American police have been given power and have not been tough to deal with appropriate force, so when a situation
