[pic 1]Analysis of Tragic flaws and characteristics of tragedy in Sanam teri qasam Prepared by: rida aftab Ma English 2nd Submitted to: mam gulnaz. 30th September 2016Tragedy: “Tragedy is a drama or literary work in which a main character is a noble, admirable character who falls from a position of some prominence to disaster or even death. Tragedy, therefore is that genre of dramatic literature where in the major character undergoes turbulent situations in life due to one’s own folly or due to some external or internal forces.” Hammartia/ Tragic flaw:“That character typically is a person of dignified or heroic stature whose downfall may result from outside forces or from a weakness within the character, which is known as a tragic flaw.”The most common tragic flaws that are found in the tragic hero are pride, anger, self-doubt, ambition etc.Latest Indian movie SANAM TERI QASAM has all the particular characteristics of a tragedy & some tragic flaws as well. I analyzed it in following respects:- [pic 2] Leading characters of the movie: Inder ( the heroprotagonist)
Saraswati (Saru) the heroineConflict:A tragedy can’t be completed without conflict. The conflict can be with the country, society or a person or sometimes with hero himself. Our hero Inder has a conflict with his own father who was a rich influential lawyer but he refused to take his only son’s case thinking him distrustful n guilty. This made him angry, rash, hateful & aggressive. Here lies the tragic flaw also. [pic 3]Comic relief:There is a comic relief also in the different scenes of the movie i.e. when Saru got a teddy bear attire and held in a lift with Inder. He didn’t know that there is a girl in the costume n started taking off is clothes. In another scene when Saru is mistakenly drunk and do small mischiefs. This kind of scenes creates a hilarious laughter n curiosity in the audience.[pic 4][pic 5]Important in Society: It is also an important characteristic of a tragedy that Hero is usually some one important in society. In this movie hero is the son of a famous & influential criminal lawyer. His father was a re-known and a rich man.[pic 6]Outside Forces/Antagonist:Outside forces may also contribute to the heros downfall. If so, the person or force whom the hero’s battles starts with the antagonist. Heroine’s father is somehow shown as an antagonist & the battle starts among the hero & heroine’s father when he (father) puts garland on heroine’s picture showing her dead while she was alive.
