In the movie, it is evident that Andrew Beckett had suffered sexual harassment and discrimination at his workplace. An example from the movie would be during the scene in the sauna where Andrew’s superiors were making derogatory jokes about male homosexuals. It would be considered as an unwelcome remark or a practical joke that had caused awkwardness for Andrew. Not only that, the eventual firing of Andrew Beckett can also be deemed as condescension. One of the partners had suspected that Andrew might have AIDS, yet he did not step in to explain to the other partners. A biased opinion and a sense of superiority over homosexuals had further contributed to the firing of Andrew. The public feels negative about Andrew’s personal situation is because he is gay, and the subject of homosexuality was a sensitive subject around the 1990s. Furthermore, Andrew had contracted AIDS, which most people were scared of because there was not enough understanding about the subject. Gays were looked down upon by the majority of society because they are different, and it was through Andrew Beckett’s case that the public had expressed their negativity on the topic. I believe the reason that the general public’s opinion around homosexuality have changed is because of everyone’s personal beliefs changing. In the 21st century, most people are used to meeting others that are different from themselves. For example, Canada has many immigrants coming in every year, and the general population has become more accepting of different ethnicities. It is no different when it comes to sexual orientation. The time of change is upon us, so it has become natural for most people to accept the different ideas around us. If the changed opinion was because of the new laws of legal actions against violators, there would be more noticeable underground groups that would revolt against homosexuality. For example, even though it is within a rather small community, it is still possible for me to hear about students disliking the idea of the GSA at school. I have not heard any negative conversations
