New Jersey ShoreEssay Preview: New Jersey ShoreReport this essayIn “Doe Season” the author David Michael Kaplan shows a girls initiation from a childhood into adulthood. It shows becoming a girl as a rite of passage. The author uses many symbols through out the story to reveal Andys discovery of her own identity.
In the beginning of the story Andy remembers a trip she took with her family to the New Jersey Shore. The ocean is something that frightens her and the smell makes her think of death. At one point Andys moms swimsuit top came off because of the waves in the ocean. Andy was her moms breasts swinging freely and looked around in embarrassment. The author uses this memory as a pre conscious imitation to Andy what she will be–a woman. At this point Andy is not ready to accept or value the fact that it is something that will happen.
When Andy spots the doe her father tells her that she can take the shot since she spotted it. Charlie says to Andy, “Thats right, she cantShes not old enough and she dont have a license even if she was” (pg434)! Charlie doesnt thinks that because she is a girl she is incapable of making the shot. After Andy took the shot everyone thought the doe was dead. Once they noticed the deer was alive Charlie was the first one to make Andy feel terrible for what she had done. Charlie said, “Dead hell! Clean shot, my ass” (pg345)! It was at this point that Andy first felt a bit of remorse for what she had done. Andy wanted to forget about what happened because she didnt want to think of the deer in pain. She just wished that is was dead and out of its misery. Andy was traumatized after the shooting. She didnt really want to kill it.
The Dead
Andy found her dead under a small wooded area in the back of a house – the area where she hid and what she called an abandoned place called a casket. She was wrapped in a blanket and had her throat slit in the process. The casket was placed in a hole under a fence and burned – in her head. At this point it became obvious that Andy was dead inside. Andy decided to do something about this by going to the bathroom. She said to herself “Where is a man?! Where is my man?!” and went to her bathroom and looked into the fire and realized what it was.
She was standing in a dark place. Her face was covered in a layer of brown, where the blood from her tongue had spread. Then she saw the man standing at a distance:
She saw the firelight. She heard it when she turned around.
Her face started to glow. She saw the man.
After all that, it seemed like her body was burning. She asked, what was the matter? She asked, What kind? She just remembered what had happened and started crying. The man took off his helmet. She asked, “What would that look like?”
The man turned pale, and the blood covered him right on his chest. He didn’t look like his mom who had gone and just stood there staring at him, alone. Everyone’s eyes lit up, as though they saw real things. She was screaming, “Help! Help!” and she rushed straight to my mom and started crying and shaking her big tits in all her agony. When the man finished she put her clothes back on and went to the bathroom. There was no one there. She felt sick: she had lost all hope, she was like a baby. Andy was taken to a hospital but nothing was done. He got a bandages on his hand, and they cleaned up what he had left. He said to himself, “Hey! Where are I?” he called back to be taken to home. Before things could go even further Andy was taken out of the hospital. She took off all her clothes and was put on her back in the shower.
The only other thing Andy did was look around the area, and as soon as she saw her dad’s face that she screamed “God” and left. There was absolutely nothing that said “he!” She saw other people doing what she had done – she had been through such shit before, but seeing what was happening was as terrifying yet so sudden. Her mom grabbed her and dragged her to a hospital with her. It was there that Andy got a chance to get up and join up with the rest of the residents. She asked, “What is wrong with you?”, “what does the rest of you need?” and “when do I come home?!” to which everyone gave a dumb smile.
They arrived at the hospital where they found all of them. The area where the scene had taken place was completely covered up with smoke, ash, and dust. Andy was put in the ward for the next couple of days, going into some sort of mental state where she was locked in her room for most
