The Tragedy of Antigone
Antigone is very self-willed because she doesnt care what the royal law says. She just knows she
must honor her family. It doesnt matter what people say that her brother has done because he is still
her brother and he deserves an honorable burial in Antigones mind. She admits to breaking the royal
law and defines what she has done as an act of honor amongst her family. Antigone was not afraid to
confront Creon for the law she has broken.
Antigone did the right thing by burying her brother because even though it was against the law
she believed it was her duty to make sure her brother get a proper burial. She knew that it might bring
her to her own death but that did not matter because her family will always come before anything else.
Antigone showed character by doing the right thing while knowing the consequences of her actions.
Even after Antigones death she did the right thing because Creon has a change of heart and regretted
what he had done to Polyneices and Antigone.
She could have had a different attitude about how she talked to Creon, and she might not have
Been sentenced to such a gruesome death and she would not have taken her own life. Antigone was
mad at Creon for making this law that did not allow her to bury her own brother. She told Creon he was
a fool and had no compassion for Polyneices, because he even though tried to take the throne from
Eteocles he was his nephew and he could have showed compassion for him.
If Antigone had come to Creon with a humble spirit, and without anger, she could have
changed her fate. Antigone could have went to Creon and told him that what she did was wrong and she
was just trying give her brother a funeral. These things may have saved her life, but she chose to show
Creon what a fool he was and for that she was sentenced to a horrible death and decided it was better
to take her own life.
