Response to the Book of RomansResponse to the Book of Romans: Chapters 6-8The Book of Romans is one of the Apostle Paul’s well known letters, and one of the more powerful and influential books in the New Testament. Although Paul never got the opportunity to visit the church in Rome, he certainly showed great care and concern for the Roman church and culture. Encountering the New Testament states that Paul wrote Romans for either one of two primary reasons, 1) out of his own concerns or 2) out of concern for the Roman church (Elwell, and Yarbrough 276). The modern church has come to believe, however, that Paul wrote Romans for both of these reasons. Paul saw the life that the Romans were living. Since the Roman Empire was so vast, Paul was continually immersed in the Roman culture. He saw their immoral way of living and it burdened him. Paul was also concerned with growth and morality of the church in Rome because it was smack-dab in the middle of all the immoral Roman culture. He saw that they were struggling and wanted to offer his encouragement and advice to help them prosper in a way that was pleasing to God.
The Book of Romans also encourages our society today. It is a book of theology and it answers questions about the Christian worldview for both Christ-followers and those interested in the Christian way of life. Encountering the New Testament tells the reader the reason Christians and the church are so engrossed with Romans: “Christians through the centuries were probably on firm ground in reading Romans primarily with an eye for its life-changing truth about God, humankind and redemption” (Elwell, and Yarbrough 276). Romans offers a new way of life and thinking if studied with an open heart. As aforementioned, Paul gives so many of the answers to the questions Christians have wondered about for years. It’s hard to believe that a living, breathing, fully informed society, full of authentic Christians, would not want to accept all of our beliefs and aspirations. As Christians, how could we be such a culture if it were not for the fact that we are able to find, read and engage in dialogue and sharing the stories of others with others all around the world?
I’m not the only one. My name is Peter. I’m an ex-con for many years with many different church backgrounds. I also write and work as a social justice advocate and I’m currently a volunteer at the Christian Family Institute and a public policy consultant. I am proud to have been part of a program at the Christian Family Institute in Portland that provided us with education, resources, and mentoring. This is also because the Christians who I’ve met since high school have always always believed that we are all as much alike as they are. I’m so grateful for their help and support and hope anyone of you that might feel overwhelmed by the lack of understanding that they’re feeling on so many levels is willing to look inside to figure out why.

The Book of Romans does not just teach us what the Lord looks like, it provides some useful information on the world. It lays out the path toward the world, and I highly recommend doing so as soon as possible.

We aren’t limited only to the living in the present. Our lives in many aspects are also based on some of our most ancient and sacred beliefs or practices. Those beliefs and practices are often deeply held, but also are sometimes deeply felt and deeply inspired.
