This drawing shows us that Joan is ready to go into battle. People say that this drawing is of the time when she fought in the siege of Orléans. Though people say that Joan normally dressed in men’s clothes this drawing displays Joan dressed in women’s clothes. The message in this picture is that Joan was a strong woman that didn’t care about her gender and believed that even though she was a woman she could still lead soldiers into battle and be as brave as any man. List three techniques the source uses to convey its message Symbolism: Joan is drawn with her sword and banner (a flag to show which side she was on), which is symbol of her courage and bravery. Colour: in this drawing the use of the black emphasises the strength and dominance Joan possessed. In this drawing Joan has been drawn as though she is looking strong and brave. This was a very rare thing to see in the Middle Ages because women weren’t allowed to fight, rule a country or even choose whom they were going to marry. This drawing is quite significant because normally women weren’t drawn in the manner that Joan has been drawn. This source shows Joan receiving ‘rightful’ punishment for challenging those in ‘higher’ places.The message behind this secondary source is that it is trying to show people that Joan was a bad person. Along with the British people many other people believed that Joan was a witch. When Joan was captured by the British she promised them that she would stop wearing men’s clothes and stop praying to her god, but not many days after she said this she was found again wearing men’s clothes and praying. The British then killed her both because they thought she was a witch and because she disobeyed their rules.
