College Search 2007
As I entered high school I knew everything I was going to do would have an impact on my future college choice. After all I will be spending a great deal of time there and will be the place I figure out what I will be doing with the rest of my life. The three colleges I am looking to get accepted to are Arizona State University, Albany State University, and St.Johns University. Although before I can choose a college there are many aspects I must decide from. Finance is not to big of a deal in the regards that my grandfather told me he will pay for me to go to any reasonably priced school as long as my grades are good enough. Location is an important factor in my decision because I would like to stay close to my friends and family, although I will not let it impact my decision that greatly. The most important factor would be admissions requirements. I would love to go to any of the three schools I have chosen but I must first make sure I meet all the requirements. Another factor that will also influence my decision is the major availability for my specific major, which is business or marketing. Also, I would like the school I choose to have a wide variety of extra-curricular activities available. Essentially, the college selection process revolves around a variety of factors including location, admissions requirements, major availability, financial costs and availability of extra curricular activities.
Arizona State University has two campuses in Arizona. One is an urban setting campus located in the west of Arizona in Phoenix. The Phoenix campus is a 300-acre commuter campus (“The University of Arizona State.” 2). Arizona has an 814 acre suburban campus with easy access to Phoenix (“The University of Arizona State”1).
Arizona State has standard admissions requirements. Both Arizona State campuses require a high school diploma with a minimum of 16 credits. The required credits are four in English, 2 in language, 1 in social studies, 3 in science, 4 in math, and one history (“At a Glance: Arizona State University”1).The average GPA of the previous applicants that have been accepted is a 3.3 (“At a Glance: Arizona State University” 3). Also, the average test scores recommended are a SAT verbal over 500 and a SAT math over 500 (“The University of Arizona State.” 4).
Although both campuses offer majors in Business, management, and marketing, the Phoenix campus offers a larger variety of courses available. The Phoenix campus offers over 7 courses in business, management, and marketing. Some of the courses that are available are Accounting, Business administration/management, finance/banking management, marking management and purchasing/procurement/contracts (“At a Glance: Arizona State University” 4). Essentially, the courses I would be most interested in would be Business administration/management and marking management.
Arizona State offers over 300 different extra-curricular activities and organizations to join. Some of the extra-curricular activities you can choose from are sororities, fraternities, and opera. Dance, band, etc (“At a Glance: Arizona State University” 5). I would like to get involved with a fraternity if I was to go away to college so I could meet new people and try new things. I would also like to get involved with the radio station if that did not work out.
The Phoenix campus has standard tuition and fees per year. The out of state tuition and fees are around $16,000 a year. Room and board are around $7,000, books and supplies are around $1,000, around $2,500 for personal expenses, and about $1,300 in transportation fees.(“At a Glance: Arizona State University” 6). Although Finance is not a factor I would like to go to a college that is not that costly so I can also have some money for after college.
St. Johns University has four different campuses located in New York City. One is a park like Queens campus in a handsome residential neighborhood near the Grand Central Parkway. The Staten Island campus overlooks the New York Harbor and is close to the Verazano Narrows Bridge (“The University of St. Johns 1-2). By car both campuses are 25 minutes at most from Midtown Manhattan. Essentially, St. Johns is a very ideal location for me to go to college considering it is close to home.
St. Johns also has very standard admissions requirements. St. Johns requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 16 credits must be earned. 6 elective credits, 4 English, 2 in math, 2 in foreign language, and 1 in science (“The University of St. Johns.” Four-Year Colleges 6). Average SAT scores submitted were between 470-580 critical reading, and 480-610 in math. Also St. Johns accepts 23% of out of state students with an average GPA between 3.0 and 3.5 (“The University of St. Johns 5).
