I enjoyed the book, I think that the Army and its leadership course almost mirror a lot of the things found in this book. I particularly found the surveys in the book where you evaluated yourself beneficial. I had for the most part already known what kind of learner I am, but it was good to be able to read and realize how I can use and improve these skills toward this new thing called college. Even in my work I can use these lessons learned to make my job easier and more organized, I can even use the surveys on my people to see about what techniques and aspects of their learning style I can use to help them do their job better.
In the GEMS exercise I learned so much valuable information about myself. For instance, my overall ratings revealed that I am a self directed person, and this is a very important characteristic of a high achiever. I am likely to strive to take charge of my work and career rather than have others in the organization do it for me. I like to accomplish things on my own. I am generally a highly motivated person who does not need to be “motivated” or “pushed” by others. However, situations where I am micro managed are likely to cause me to become de-motivated. I set demanding standards of accomplishment for myself. Getting results from my own hard work is satisfying to me. If I am not being recognized by my boss as a result of the hard work and superior performance that I am doing, I am likely to find myself experiencing high job dissatisfaction.
Something I did not particularly enjoy was the discussion boards. I now understand that they are a fundamental part of online learning but it just pains me to have to post items, not so much because others read it, that does not bother me, but the fact that I have to respond to others is the part that kills me. Usually, discussion board posts are people’s ideas or opinions; I just have a hard time finding the desire to listen to others opinions on what we are learning. Sometimes people are just off the wall with their responses and for the most part I do not really care about what they have to say. I guess that all comes back to my learning style that proves that I like to learn alone. I find it such a burden it take the time to read someone’s thoughts and ideas, which are sometimes insightful,
It sounds so much easier to do so, but the reality is that I want more of something and doing so means doing it more times per year. The main problem that I see with the lack of discussions is the tendency to assume that the person making the comment or comment’s thoughts are the real ones, that it is all the talking it can takeв about them. That is, it is quite possible that some personвÐs opinions would be considered to be more important than others, so even though it seems the opposite, it does seem that the people it is talking about might never say it as far as what they really want to talk about. If I wanted to share an example of what a conversation is like, but in which I could not find a consensus, how could I provide a clear, logical statement that shows that the person responding to it does not have a right to say it?
To put it otherwise:
I do not believe that there are all the “real” arguments for and against my views and I do not believe that I might believe that some of the “really hard” arguments for and against my views will prove to be more difficult to prove.
As for being a racist, it simply does not seem like I would like to get angry with a person who doesn’s opinion on something. When considering my own thoughts regarding being racist, I do feel more or less that things such as race and class, as well as a culture, are important. As for being a pro-socialist, I agree that there should not be a “progressive” opinion. But does this mean I am only a fan of libertarianism? Again, I am an optimist. I know that things should not change as much as they have changed in the past and there should be a more open marketplace for ideas. But as I stated in my answers, I have made an effort since I started to “take part” in both of those things that has made life easier for those who wish they had more time to see how things are going. I think as I have said in previous posts, to give people a chance to make their own arguments for and against is only good for myself. If there’s any form of progressivist or antislavery thinking that is so vital to the future of society, I believe we should all be making a conscious effort to get past it. What I donвÐt agree with is not that people will think differently, but my current beliefs.
