Ive never known a man like him, but I had a dream in which I met Boo in 1938. Boo was so sick, this man who I had never met before. He had been the kind of guy that a kid in Baltimore would not want to meet. He was a good kid who’d been arrested and had nothing to do with our case. He had been a nice guy to my family. Nobody loved him but him. I met him when I was eight years old. We went up the railroad tracks in Baltimore, and he said he wanted to talk me into getting back a bicycle, so that if I was in the way of my bicycle at that time, he could leave me alone. The next morning, we both climbed over to the first stop and, holding it up, sat in the front row, where I stayed the whole night. So I told the whole story to Scout. I told Scout that I wanted to be a big boy in the military for thirty-six years. He was not impressed at the idea. I went home to Florida and was in a little truck with him. He left us two days later and gave us a ticket by hand to the next day’s trial, at the very beginning of their afternoon march. We were all at the courthouse waiting for the defendant to show up, when a judge suddenly came down and told us to make this day pass.
You see, in the novel, Boo is the first man in America to face conviction for a crime punishable by death, and the crime he’s charged is murder for which it’s the only thing he’s had this year. However, his father was a very strong man. He was married to an elegant lady from the old country home. When I was thirteen and had a chance to get back to Maryland, I spent two days with the court. It was not the longest court case there was. We got a judge to tell us not to bring the case, and instead they let us take it to Judge G. J. W. Brown. He handed it over to the Maryland attorney general for review, which I went back to Maryland for almost twelve months because Maryland was not a state. When it was over, I went back to this state to join the Army, where I was promoted to brigadier-general to be a top lieutenant. So when I came back to Maryland, I got promoted to brigadier-general in March of 1937. I had to fight a long battle there that was a lot of trouble at the time; I just couldn’t let the army fight my way to brigadier-general. So I called Judge M. Green, who was appointed by the governor, but his office was never opened; nobody ever wanted to bring the case; nobody did and nobody would get it overturned.
